Ouch! Been out of the private ownership for so long insurance is a little steep!

Annoyingly I sold my private car 4 years ago when I got a company car. So my private insurance no claims stopped accruing. Although I had a work insurance policy I only clocked up 3 years and a bit of NCB.

So despite my 10 years of no claims and my additional 3 years of no claims they can only take my last 3 years no claims as too much time has passed since my private policy was taken out!

It means that my quotes are getting in just under £1k!

For someone in his mid 30s with 15 years clean driving licence it's quite depressing. I guess I live in London so it's to be expected. And fully comp insurance etc....

Still Chris Knott are looking most competitive so far... I'm pitching them up against admiral at the moment... We'll see what the outcome is!

I haven't even bought the bloody thing yet! Lol!

Oh I hadn't thought of privilege. Thanks for the tip. The daft thing is I've had performance cars before but because I had a company car for a few years so has basically put me back to ground zero!

At least I'm not in my 20s else I fear it would be worse. It's just a shame that they cannot add my NCB from both private and company car policies!

I got my 350 when I was 20 and I was paying just over a grand. Next year at 21 it went down to 700.

£1k sounds pretty good in all fairness. I got my completely standard 2007 zed when I was 39 and I had 20 years NCB, including high performance cars and motorbikes.... the cheapest I could get was £900 through Admiral and "specialist" companies like Sky & others couldnt come close. I was amazed at how expensive the zed was as bmw m3`s, porsche boxsters and the like were coming in at around the £450->£500 price mark in comparison.

Id also advise to check all the small print. Ive just had a 45 minute argument with one of my insurance companies on the phone. Basically one of my motorbikes cost me £70 to insure back in April for a full 12 months policy. I now wish to cancel this and they charge a £50 cancellation fee and also claw back any "cash back" offers they initially gave me which the sales person didnt tell me about at the time. So, now its going to end up having cost me £120 for just 4.5 months insurance. What really kicks me in the privates is that ive been with this same company for 5 years and when it came to renew this year I could have got the same 12 months cover for £59 elsewhere but decided to stay with them as a sense of loyalty.

Thanks Rabbit - I always do, but definitely worth checking. Funnily enough if I were to insure myself on a Speed Triple it would be under £300 FC with 0 excess. Stupid!

Anyway, this is down to the fact that my 14 years NCB are not consecutive since I had a company car - so only technically have 3 years NCB.

Living in London doesn't help I guess. Anyway getting down to mid 700s with 0 excess, legal cover and all the added standard extras. To be honest, it'll do. Annoyingly if I had my full no claims it would be around £500 :/

Surely the bet option is to just leave it insured, no? It annoyed me no end that years of bike NCB counted for nothing.

Surely there must be factors increasing your insurance - like crime claim rate where you live?

I'm 33, it was 17 years since I last had car insurance so 0 NCB whatsoever - got insured for £670 fully comp.

So if you've 3 years NCB I'd be stunned at £900+ unless there's something massively different - and that's usually locations and claim rates I'd imagine?

It's mid 700s at the moment. It must just be London I guess - or underwriters being funny about me owning a "powerful" RWD car... it's daft.

Also bear in mind I'm going for £0 excess, fully comp and everything else. If I added £300 voluntary excess it would be around £600 - but I don't see the point.

I'll get it back down now that I will be (hopefully) be insuring a car in my name again.

I live in SE London - in between Charlton and Greenwich, so not a ****hole, but I guess close enough to Woolwich to be an issue! :D

C'est la vie. I'm not going to worry about it. I'm getting close to finding "the one". So it'll be worth it in the end.

Yeah, we went through something similar. Caroline got a company car and then got made redundant 3 years later. What we did was to keep her old car, a fairly worthless Daewoo Lanos, put it on SORN but by keeping it insured we were able to keep up her maximum no claims. There's another factor here, Caroline being close to retirement meant we knew she wasn't going to have a company car for many years anyway.

Id definitely speak to a few other companies. My wifes got a company car now, so when her own insurance ran out we never renewed it. I called up and spoke to the insurance company to ask how many years we could have it "on hold" and im pretty sure that particular company said 4 or 5 years. Although if its less, i`ll just insure some ancient old heap of a car for £50 a year using it just to maintain it. Its worth noting however that i dont think you actually need to even own the car you are insuring, and the car doesnt even have to be on the road. So if you know of an old moped or something in a barn, that would be ideal to insure.

No, because i need the ncb on that policy to go onto another insurance policy. As ive got maximum ncb anyway, i dont mind "loosing" 1 years ncb to switch to the other policy half way through as it makes no difference to the premium. Unfortunately the "hidden" cancellation charges cause the problem.
