What an animal! Rousch supercharger with over 700bhp apparently, was built for the Topgear live show. The guy started it up.......my god! sounded like the gates of Hell had been thrown open . Did a Road trip about a year and a half ago from East to West coast and we were desperate to have a convertible for the trip.... ended up with.... Really wish we had gone for a Mustang but the car was reliable and did us proud so cant complain! Any tips? Cheers. Get use to those roads, plenty of those about and are truly awesome. Well your trip looks simliair to the last two weeks of our trip where we went via Dallas - Amarillio - Alburquerque - Flagstaff - Las Vegas/Grand Canyon - San Diego and LA. Tips, where does one start. All depends on what your looking for out there, anything goes in America Dallas, got to go to the grassy Knoll and ' X ' on the road where JFK was shot - Totally humbling experience. Sat on the grass for a good couple of hours taking it all in. Grand Canyon is must for obvious reasons and if you are feeling brave do the ' Skywalk '. Costs to get there though. Las Vegas - Mental oriental place. Have you decided which hotel your staying at? Do the gun range there as its the only place in America where your allowed to fire a fully automatic rifle. We went for the Iraq pack deal ( M249 Saw, Berretta, M16 rifle ) A must go to when your in Vegas is the old part of Vegas, go to Fremont Street. One of the biggest light shows, just found this clip on You tube . Thats just to name a few things to do, just totally depends what your going there for. Any tips? Cheers. Nice! Last year, actually it was Sep 2010... I did 'Frisco to Vegas via San Diego. Stayed in Carmel near Pebble Beach and then Santa Barbara on the way and also had a few days in Palm Springs. Did Highway 1. Brilliant road. Visited Grand Canyon, was going to do choppers but they weren't flying that day due to wind. Did the sky walk which was quite cool but very expensive - the native americans are making a killing at the canyon. Agree that Freemont Street is a must. So is a show. We did one of the Cirque shows and it was ace, the half price ticket places was recommended by our hotel Concierge, we ended up getting a few things from them and it was a total bargain. I've got to be honest in saying that although you do get a nice feeling of driving a Mustang around the US, the convertible roof becomes pretty pointless in the heat and if you actually want to talk or anything like that. Also, if you plan on turning around any corners, the Mustang is... erm... not the most agile of vehicles. The Challenger, however was absolutely amazing. We got a brand new one given to us and it is hands down the best car I have ever driven or been in including many much more expensive ones. However it is the whole left hand drive that just keeps bugging me. I know you can get conversions for RHD done by a family friend who specialises in American cars said that the car never feels the same afterwards. Anyway as for travelling.... My fiancee and I are looking at visitng the states as I got a bonus this year from my company basically paying for my flights. When booking a car, do it direct with the provider you're using. When booking via a third party you *might* get a better price (although there are complications here), but very frequently will get the "or similar" instead of the car you want. 2. If booking with a larger more upscale firm, you can often get good discounts for numerous random reasons, so it is worth ringing them on Skype or something and asking. For example, before we went last time, Hertz did 10% discount if you paid with Amex Platinum. 5 minutes later my application for a UK Platinum cashback card was approved (the American standards are somewhat different) and hey presto - a lot of money saved. 3. If you are renting a car for a while, the offers by Hertz can be very tempting. You can often get yourself a Camaro SS, Challenger R/T or some other nice car of your choice at a very minor premium in comparison to the total hire price. Don't get the Corvette - boot space will struggle to fit a rucksack and these are all pretty old stock. 4. Do see the main sights, etc as you've simply got to, but the best bit about going around the States is seeing more of the real non-touristy stuff. Take turns off the main roads, stop in small towns and go away from tourist traps (i.e. away from the coasts ) 5. Search around for Rodeos/BBQ cook-offs/going down rivers in a hoop with a sixpack of Bud or whatever you fancy on the way - when in Rome... 6. Have fun.
