Just got the email about Lion (10.7.X?) which looks cool Do I have to buy Snow Leopard (10.6.X?) AND THEN buy Lion? Or can I just jump straight to Lion? PLUS... looking at the Snow Leopard options... there is "Single User" or "Family License" Which do I go for? We only have one iMac (My MacBook Pro is works, so they sort that out) but we have three users on it. Do I have to pay DOUBLE just so I can have multiple users on the same machine? I am talking about a proper COMPUTER... called an iMac. Even if I DO have to pay for both... it is £20 for each upgrade. Which is only a QUARTER of how much rip off Microshite charge for their shitty, non working, "constantly updating" (hot fixes) so called (un)operating systems. Function AND form Problem with IT departments is that they are scared of them. Plus it is different applications of the two things for different areas. I do bitch about my PC's I have ot work on... but they are servers running in hospitals and alike. so the staff don't have the knowledge to run Macs. If they did, the software I write runs a LOT faster and a LOT more stable on a Mac (well Unix) than it does on say Server2003/8, just because the OX is SO much more reliable and cleans up after itself PROPERLY. I use both equally, and I find both to have equally irritating habits. I love my Apple hardware and iOS, but I wouldn't want to be without a Windows machine either as I understand the technical side of it better. Lots of people slate Macs because they hate the brand, people that slate PCs generally do because they hate the system, generally speaking. Hating Macs seems to be a mixture of experience and perception but mostly perception, how many Mac haters can say they spent a good few months trying one out? The psychology of it is in effect in the same way there is an irrational hatred of Starbucks (well rational if you justify it by talking about quality of coffee, commercialism etc but then again that's what the free world preaches doesn't it? Who is sitting there right now wearing something from Gap, Next or Nike who have the same core values as Starbucks?). I use both, I find Macs easier quicker and overall better to use, and yes that includes comparing side by side against an equally specced PC. In the same time I have had my MacPro my parents have gone through two expensive PCs. There is good reason - Windows and it's PCs has to be compatible with a far wider range of hardware, peripherals and software. Apple made a decision to make and supply both the hardware platform and OS as well as their own approved list of peripherals and software - this is clearly much easier to 1. keep stable and 2. charge a premium. Ekona Posted June 8, 2011 Share Posted June 8, 2011 If my PC goes tits up then I'm very comfortable digging around in the registry and all the fiddly bits to sort it out. If my Mac ever did the same I wouldn't have a clue where to start as the entire file structure and program is completely different. I'm not saying that it's any more difficult to learn as I suspect it's not, it's just what I've grown up with and what I'm used to. For me, a PC makes the simple things more complicated than they need to be at time, whereas on a Mac the complicated stuff becomes an absolute impossibility to sort out. That's the real downsides to both units, although Win7 is about as perfect an OS as I've ever used and makes the call for OSX much less urgent. Still needs tidying up though.
