plenum spacer problem solving

Recommended Posts

ok so i know i could sit down and figure this one out for myself but thought it might be nice to have a team effort (if this results in me ending up with a better finish then i will suffer that ;) )

I bought a plenum spacer many many moons ago from another forum member. The spacer came with somewhat less parts that it was supposed too :dry: so for the time being I just cobbled together some bits and got it all sorted temporarily (im sure we all remember the cracked plenum fun). so now i have a bit of time to get the car up to scratch i thought it was a good point to revisit the plenum spacer. so the facts/issues:

- it is a sloped solid aluminium spacer, 7mm back and 10mm front. i found it once, i believe its an american one? but i cant remember what make it was, any ideas?

- it didnt come with strut bar spacing washers or longer bolts so i resolved that finding some that fitted

- it didnt come with a gasket so i liquid gasket'd it this weekend

so the issues i have are:

-air leak on 6 middle bolts, possible casues are

--- the nylon spacers under the 6 towers are already squashed and now leak air round them

--- the bolts supplied are just plain wrong, it was suplied with only bolts, no washers. I have put rubber o-rings with washers onto them in an attempt to seal it but hasnt completely worked.

--- the botls arent long enough in some places so i need new ones anyway, can anyone reccomend a supplier for them? and what type are reccomended, i assume ones suimilar to stock with a large flat head on them are best?

--- is there somewhere i could buy new nylon spacers for the 6 bolts

sorry to type so much but trying to describe it best i can.

Cheers for any help/tips/links :)

Throw it away and buy viewtopic.php?f=157&t=42521 :yahoo:

Job done right first time :thumbs:

In your case 3rd or 4th maybe. ;):lol::blush:

haha true enough and that is my motto.

annoyingly (and what i didnt want to say at the time) was that the spacer sold to me was in no way what it should have been (ie. had nothing with it) it pi**ed me off big time.

if i got a new one what would i do with this one... cant sell it as it is

Like I said - PM the usual to obtain the bolts and the plastic spacers which sit under the central plenum bolts!!

:bangin:

why? the bolts wont be the same size as the motordyne ones or stock ones due to the slope on this spacer. so i need to work out the required sizes from either some original instructions of the spacer or a few measurements here and there. Besides, how do you make new contacts if you get someone else to do the work for you ;) networking man, networking! :lol:

AAM seem to do an angled spacer http://www.z1auto.com/prodmore.asp?model=350z&cat=engine&prodid=3336

Might be worth speaking to Adam about bolt sizes etc

top man! :thumbs::thumbs:

i found this http://www.350zmotoring.com/forums/modi ... print.html

which says

The angle, however, precludes the use of spacers, included with the ME unit, which offer support for the 6 interior plenum support posts.

i wonder how i cracked my plenum :dry:

The AAM reuses some of the OEM plenum bolts and all of the STB bolts, the supplied spacers of which are comprised of stacked washers.

knowing which bolts to use where was a nightmare esp. not knowing i was to reuse stock bolts in the first place

I will say that the AAM required a trip to the hardware store in search of longer bolts, rubber gaskets and washers, as I was unable to get an airtight seal to the before-mentioned interior bolts with the supplied washers.

:bang::bang::bang:

Following AAM’s instructions, I initially tried two washers on either side and had vibration issues when the engine would come into contact with the STB. After adding additional washers to the driver’s side and increasing tension to bow the STB upwards, I was still experiencing vibration.

I had this also, leving marks on my plenum, after some fine tuning sorted it

Just chalk it up to experience and whatever you do don't talk about it on the forum as all you will get is sarcastic and unhelpful replies...
