right found a square hole in middle which im presuming was the release?? no cable thingy? what other way is there to open it?

That is it, there is a little cable stucked with some velcro on the inside

Secret compartment.... is it of any use? I like to make the most of my boot space so any extra compartments are more than welcome!!
