Buying a Z'ed

ace

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm about to buy my first Z'ed hopefully this weekend I have 5 lined up for viewing so as a newbie need some answers,

one is an 55 plate UK convertable in Black with Tan seats but the centres are like a basket weave material in black is this standard for a UK car as I thought the seats might be all Tan leather, the steering wheel has cruise control on the right hand side of the wheel and nothing on the left side is that also correct for a UK car?

One of the other cars I'm viewing is an 06 UK 'Face lift' what exactly is a face lift as the dash centre cubby still has a lid and not open like 07 models so I'm confused is it an older model on a late plate?

Welcome mate.

Firstly the easiest way to check if it's UK spec is the shape of your number plates. All imports have square number plates. If you're in any doubt check the paperwork when you go to see it.

In 2006 they made a few cosmetic changes and beefed up the engine to 296bhp. Easiest way to check is look at the grill in the front bumper. If it's got two thick slats accross it you've got yourself a facelift.

so there's very little in the 06 'face lift' I was thinking maybe the bonnet was different or something

The ones I'm viewing are all UK models for sure are there any little things I should be looking for that might have been a factory improvement or recall of some sort just to make sure it was done.

Roadster's have no bluetooth so will have cruise controls on the right but nothing on the left of the wheel, so that is okay.

Face lift had different interiors as well as grill and engine - if hazard warning switch is by the ashtray/your left elbow it's an early car, if the hazard warning switch is under the heater controls it's a face-lift car - simples!

Mesh on the seats is also standard in a roadster I believe, but someone else will have to confirm.

There's more changes than that, that's just one of the easier ways ot spot the difference. 06's have LED lights, better quality interior amongsy other things. The search button is your friend. ;)

viewed the first one today as it was very near where I work strange thing is it was £13400 when it first went on Pistonheads I went to view it but the screen price was £13999 then today in Pistonheads he up'ed the price to £13895. All the tyres were on the limit and the front end and mirrors very chippy in my mind that must be a grands worth of work although the rest of the car was very nice. I still have 4 to view on Saturday so will kep you posted thanks for the heads up what to look for on the 06 models. :)

If you're unsure whether it's a UK car or not there are a number of things you can check as well as the bumpers - quite a few imports now have UK bumpers on so this isn't a reliable check.

On UK cars the oil pressure gauge has increments of 0, 60, 120 psi; the JDM cars have 0, 4, 8 bar.

UK spec cars have the indicator stalks on the left and wipers on the right; I think it's the other way around on the JDMs.

All UK cars have headlight washers; not all JDM cars will do.

Good luck finding a car!

back again, I viewed an 05 Silver roadster one lady owner and garaged all it's life 32,000 miles FDSH I was expecting it to be really special as on the phone she kept calling it her baby and how much she's cherished it etc. It drove lovely as a 30 thousand miler should nice and tight but the body work had scatches and chips on nearly every panel god knows how she managed that.

Then literaly half a mile away I viewed a Yellow GT4 50,000 miles FSH, perhaps somebody with the same car can enlighten me but the car looked like it had different shades of panels especially the bumpers and mirrors I could not tell if they had been repainted they did not look as though they had the owner insisted it's the pearlescent in the paint could this be true  it did seem to look right at certain angles.

Back to the first roadster I viewed it's the only one I have found while trawling the internet that has a basket type weave covering on the centre panels of the seats would this be a non GT then

  • 2 weeks later...

After looking at many cars what were so called 'mint mate' but not to my 'mint' standards I drove from London to Hull and bought an 06 'facelift model' Roadster with the bigger engine in Gunmetal metallic, 1 owner 13,000 miles privately owned for a very good price :yahoo:

I could'nt bring it back with me as it's having a private plate change and have to wait until next week to pick her up with it's old reg number back on.

I'm getting a train back up there and it will be the nicest drive back hopefully with the roof down :yahoo:

Cheers Alex, I have never been that far North East, I have inlaws in Harrogate though. The first time I have seen The Humber Bridge the guy I bought the car from lived virtually under it I must admit it is some sight to behold.

I'm already thinking what goodies to go for first thing will be a stubby ariel I think :) what else?

Ok, I need to get insurance on the car before I pick it up is there a recommended company you guys can point me at I'll only be covering about 5000 per annum so a specialist might do :)

Does your company have an age limit at all mate? I am 23 and bell.co.uk who I usually go with have produced a fairly high quote this year. Thanks

not got the car yet and things are'nt looking rosey, the road tax will be due beginning of September and she's in the £435 bracket :scare: I don't mind she's going to be worth it but called around many brokers today including Chris Knott and cannot use my no claims bonus on this vehicle as I already use it on my van, so with over 20 years no claims and clean license I may have to insure the car from scratch with no bonus surely that cannot be right

Well yesterday I picked up my new car I got insurance with Chris Knott who gave me a very good quote as nobody would mirror my 20+ years trouble free bonus from my van so started with no bonus just some forum member discount.

got a train from London to Hull and picked up the car I didn't fancy just jumping on the M1 and bringing it back so drove to Skegness on the A roads then to Grantham and picked up the A14 onto the M11. This has been the best drive of my life the A roads were quite so could drive the car spritley on some parts and the car drove better when pushed to my amazement it just loved it.

I had another Z'ed (bronze) chase me on the A14 I think just to say hello before he turned off which was nice  then set the cruise on the M11 turned the sounds up and had a comfortable drive to my house.

I must say these cars have to be one of the best all rounders for a sports car it has everything from the speed to the comfort. :teeth:

next will be an order for some detailing products.
