Adding an AUX to the tape deck: job done.

I might not well be the first european to do this mod, but I would like to confirm that

YES, this mod does work on 2003-2005 euro spec HU

which as you know, do not have the XM radio/external cd-changer connector on the back of the HU, making most fancy ipod connection products such as USA SPEC's useless.

I followed this guide carefully:

http://my350z.com/forum/audio-video/93941-make-line-aux-your-2003-bose-headunit-step-step-guide-5.html

I had never soldered before, nor removed the dash. Overall, a normally skilled artisan as I am should take between 2 and 5 hours to complete the job.

I also modded the tape deck, removing an arm and spring, to avoid the need of a tape in the deck.

Sound quality is very good in my opinion, and using a normal jack, you can connect any type of mp3, ipod, car pc or whatever. I routed the wire under the gear knob and central tunnel to the armrest glove compartment, where my ipod is docked.

Downs are that you have to pick up the ipod to change song.

Ask for more details! :yahoo:

Nice one  glad to hear you got it sorted - makes a good change from the skipping cds doesn't it!

Later in the same guide shows how to add a switch so you can retain tape function... incase you ever play tapes... :yuck:

I tried using the glove box too, but eventually bought a dash mount for my ipod (from ebay) and routed the wire behind the dash to it. Makes the whole changing track thing much easier!

Cheers,

Steve

Thank you! :yahoo:

That dash route was my idea also, actually I used that route for my GARMIN!

I must confess that the Itouch is very cosy and confortable in the glove box, but I will consider your option soon, cause I feel that changing tracks from there will get on my nerves at some point. Further more, the Itouch is a cool device so why hide it? :boxing:

Cheers!

BY THE WAY!

I bought a US spec HU to take advantage of an extra tape deck to sacrifice and guess what I found out?

B)

US spec HU and Euro spec, as you know, have different connectors on the back. To be more precise, Euro ones are missing the XM radio connector. Well, after opening both HU, I noticed that both US and Euro spec HU have the same motherboard, and only the daughter board is different, as the US spec has one extra connector.

My hypothesis is that if you change the daughter board the extra connector would work, allowing us Euro spec guys to usa a USA SPEC PA NIS 11 and similia. :headhurt:

I did this mod a few weeks ago and worked a treat for me too. I also bought an ipod dock connector cable that goes to usb, audio and video plus a cigarette lighter multiplug with usb power output so my ipod is also charged whilst in the car and the video feed goes to my satnav.

links for cable etc

Very cool!

What do you think about the mother board mod? Do you feel it would work? :boxing:

If you mean the tape deck hack as described above - it worked a treat.

The cable you are using should be shielded audio cable so will be a core wire surrounded by coloured insulation, then this is covered by a wire sheath (made of lots of woven copper wires), then finally covered with the outer layer of insulation. You have one of these for the left channel and one for the right channel.

When you strip the insulation back for each wire, twist the two wire sheaths together into one. That is your earth wire (A-GND).

You need to use a sheilded cable to protect from RF interference (there is a lot of this in a car!). Use something like this and chop the phono plugs off the end.

It's dead easy to do, I was surprised that I could have done it in about 2 hours including console out and back.

Some tips I picked up when removing the console:

a) you need a philips (X-head) screwdriver at least 15cm long to get to some of the screws

B) use a magnetic screwdriver (or put a magnet on the shaft). It makes taking the screws out and feeding them back in easier and stops you dropping them (you will definitely drop one otherwise).

B) disconnect the ribbon to the aircon controls - its easier

c) you have to pull the control unit (what the aircon ribbon cable connects to) forwards a good few inches so you can get the bottom of the console fully out.

d) when taking the plugs out of the back of the Bose, twist the entire console through 90 degrees and use a small screwdriver to poke the tabs that lock the plugs in place. Fingers can't push hard enough and the tabs are on the bottom so are fiddly to get to.

When you take apart the Bose, there is an extra screw that holds the bottom on which goes through the heatsink - you will spot it.

Good luck - it's a great mod!
