Steering wheel assistance needed please!

Hi guys,

Looking at getting a wheel retrimmed, so thought it'd be easiest for me to pick up another wheel to allow me to carry on using my car as a daily while the new wheel is being worked on.

So my question is, will a DE steering wheel fit a HR? From what I can see they look almost identical.. If so, will my HR radio and cruise control switches fit the wheel? As they are a slightly different style between the years and the 'On/Off' and 'Cancel' switches are the opposite way around, will this cause an issue?. I presume my airbag will fit the same aswell? I've attached a photo below to show the minor differences between the switches. DE on the left, HR on the right.

When I had mine done, the switches (specifically the CC) didn't work from another DE used wheel (my original wheel was a DE too). I ended up going back to the switches from my existing wheel, on the re-trimmed wheel. Which was fine, just a faff as I didn't find out until I came to use the cruise!

If it was me, I'd fit the DE wheel now and send off your HR wheel for re-trim and live without the switches and airbag for a short while, as you know that wheel will work when you come to put it back in.

I know this seems to be over the top, and it might have just been the wheel I bought, and I'm sure not having an airbag for a while might up some, but it's all just IMO.

If you use Jack @ royal steering wheels he'll trim up a spare wheel send it to you in the post and then you return him your old wheel. You have to pay a small deposit though, but its returned to you when he receives your wheel.

Alternatively you can go to him and hell install it for you. he's based in Aylesbury

Loads of us have used him.

Hi Stu, many thanks for the speedy reply. I was thinking I'd use my steering wheel controls too, to save the hassle encase the others don't work. From what I can tell, the housings and silver trim pieces are identical in size, so my controls should fit when I go to swap them over. I've had a look online and it seems the controls are held in by 2 screws either side once you've taken the back trim of the wheel off.

That's a great idea though, sending my HR wheel off to get retrimmed.. In regards to the airbag, I guess I could always switch that over to the DE wheel while mine is getting retrimmed and just live without the switches for the meantime.

I'll return with a few links!

He's actually the chap who I'm speaking to about getting it retrimmed haha! I've just emailed him to see if he has any spare wheels that I could use in the meantime, would be really handy if he does!

Ahh thank you! That thread showing the 4mm extra thickness on the wheel is about perfect for what I'm after, had only seen the 2mm extra until you'd posted that. Thanks!

The only fault I had with Jack is he can take a while to get back to emails! so if he doesn't respond try calling him.

Thoroughly nice chap though.

Yeah I had a browse through his website, and also his work on other forums and every single job looks spectacular and everyone says he's a standup guy. Definitely going to give my wheel to Jack.

Strip the steering wheel controls off the De wheel and send that wheel off to be retrimmed then when you get it back just fit the HR controls to the new wheel. It definateley works I've done it!

That's superb, thank you so much. I was wondering if theres any differences to the wheels and if it stops you fitting one to the other. Or if you can't fit controls to one of the wheels. Thank you for clearing it up for me.
