How strong are the gearboxes?

Another thing I noticed today is that occasionally in 4th gear there's a vibrating noise when I initially put it in - like when a phone vibrates on a metal table.

How long is it safe to drive with until it goes bang?

It's strange, when it rains the cars condition seems to improve!

I drove home after posting that and the gearbox was smooth as silk, cold and hot lol

No idea Geg. Paradoxically, although they're flawed, they seem to be pretty tough. There's a large demand for them by the drifting community to adapt to their none Zed cars, so it can't be all doom and gloom.

Heard nothing back from any of the Engineers regarding fabricating Synchros so I think I'm going strip my own box and learn to refurb it. Doubt it's as hard as people (who've never done it - as usual) make it out to be.

Glad to hear your gearbox is good!

I was jsut driving in 1st and 2nd as there were loads of speed bumps, there was a grinding noise which was intermittent but quite quiet too, and the first 2 gears are just awful. Changing gears chucks you about, it's horrible. I can't believe this :( May book in to the specialist near Watford.

jug have you tried gearboxman re upgrades?

As you say, how hard can it be to upgrade the synchos + layshaft bearing, particularly for a specialist - as I mentioned above, the boxes apear to be rated to 1000bhp and presumably over 800 lb ft! - It is a cruel irony that folk with other cars covet the 350 box...

I cant help thinking there has to be an upgrade service offered by someone, even if we have to ship the parts from the States or Japan and install here - changing synchros and shaft bearings is routine work in reconditioning gearboxes - clearly the gear clusters are all but indestructable

Geg & Jug...lets search the web til we either find just the upgraded parts or complete service, at a very cost effective rate, then offer it to Indis willing to offer a good remove and re-fit price - Anyone else interested in spending a few hours a week researching until we cure this Achilles heel?

We can then get feedback on SMF + clutch upgrade packages and sort this mess out...he says naively with good intention

Failing this, I guess we shall just have to offer an LS3 solution, complete with Vette box! :)

Well OS Giken do a complete upgrade on gears and synchros for the Z33, but the price is insane. around £3,000

http://www.osgiken.n...=9&product=gear

I don't think there's any problem getting upgrade kits, it's because those upgrade kits are aimed at the track enthusiasts and command premium dollar. Bit of a rip off this country for parts. they just replace the $ sign for a £ sign and stick it to us.

I just want some uprated Synchros rather than the ones made out of a dairylea I can buy from Nissan.

And cheers, I'll get in touch with Gearboxman tomorrow or Monday and see if they can suggest anything....for reasonable money.

Yes, they can be bought , but the install cost in UK is prob prohibitive = I guess £1k for new 1000 bhp gearbox is pretty good :)

How have we gone from 350Z gearboxes being pretty much very decent apart from the odd bad apple over the last 13 years, to they're all a pile of crap and everyone should source a $1500 brand new 'box immediately?

Did I miss something?

Sorry, but I don't suppose anyone could give me a breakdown of the options?

Refurb box cost and time

Recondition my own box

Used box (probably silly option)

Upgrade/replace Synchros

I literally only have 1k to spare, I'm worried I'll be finished with this haha. I know the clutch and DMF are £1000 fitted, but the gearbox seriously worries me. Have it booked in to Japex soon, but will change the oils etc first. It's not even nice to drive, I'm gutted.

Thanks so much for your help guys :)

Googling something and judging the scale of the problem from number of results is really not the way you should be looking at things...

Well either way, there's problems with the gearbox. Nissan concur, hence 9 or 10 revisions and ongoing of complaints across many forums.

It's not imaginary when my first gearbox was toast and my second one is going the same way. and others report the same exact problems across the world

..spend 5 mins looking ..they all lead to forum members across the world crying into their wallets - if no problem, why the gearbox replacement description in sale item above? - coincidence or creative marketing? - Reckon there must be a prob...ask Geg..
