  • 1 month later...

Well i've had a little time off, last fews days anyway and the wife is out of the country so started to look at her again.. as by now you might have realised i've been trying to get rid of her as is causing a HUGE headache.. :/ no takers yet tho.. not that i'm bothered too much ^^

Anyway.. and update - I put new sparks in after she broke down and at weekend I got chance to run a compression test.. all cylinders are at 175. however two of the spark are black and the others clean? both sparks came of our no.5 and no.6 - when she was in the shop I was told that she was sparking erratically? I've been through the wiring for the CPS sensors again and i've checked the MAF along with the coils and their wiring too. Everything looks ok. She still cranks, pops and bangs and very rough idle with foot on the gas..

I have replaced all the CPS sensors and the crank sensor, considering getting another set?... running out of ideas now, I'd rather not take the timing cover off again unless I have too, as when Chain was replaced it did look timed up.

So, gonna continue to sit in her on my drive and look cool to the neighbours B)

Sorry to read of your troubles.

Stabbing wildly in the dark and some suggestions:

I have heard that some flywheels can be put in out of phase, basically 180 degrees out, although not sure which ones, it was the first question asked to me when i had a cps sensor go down when i swapped flywheels to which i had similar problems, running rough as hell and would only start with foot on the gas, fortunately it was literally the sensor on mine, although we did take off the gearbox to check the alignment was correct.

I am also sure i have read because the throttle bodies are fly by wire, they can need resetting if removed, especially if your battery has gone funky whilst off.

Other than that and i have no idea who you have taken it to, but imho take it to a specialist, someone who is fully up to speed on this sort of car, Horsham, Abbey, Kaizer Motor Company.

I would also suggest with a car like this, you need an HKS twin spark, they were a life saver on Rx7's.

I just want to thank everyone in here who helped me with my Zed issues... Guys I really appreciate it.

Ok... Last Sunday I was tinkering about around the Bitch as i usually do and with a host of newly acquired parts decided to have a clean and a tidy.. (what else can you do when your zed has been dead for 8 months and after 3 garages had no idea :/)

I put in a new crack sensor and decided to give her a try.........nothing still dead, however it did cough and give me a glimmer of hope, it also...... Threw a code ^^ Cam bank 2 sensor

Now last January I bought 3 new sensors from a shop on Amazon.. not sure who it was but 2 cps and 1 crank these did not fix the issue, I then went on to do other stuff as per my first post.

Yesterday I decided to replace Cam bank 2 with a used sensor from Emperor Tuning (ebay)... and you'll never guess wot... she F***ing Started and she revved.. however she was popping and spluttering down the left bank.. so this morning decided to open her up and take off the intake and play with the coil plugs, and............yup 4 & 6 plugs were on the wrong ones :/ im such a n00b,

so she has been as right as reign all day, bombed into Hull to show her off to mates and family with a massive grin.. so again guys thanks for all the help suffice to say she's off eBay now :p

I suppose the moral of the story is, don't always trust what your buying, the sensors I got off amazon were obviously duff.. and these used sensors from the zed breaker on Flea bay did the trick :D

so happy, so so happy!!! shame ive missed all the meets and car shows this year :(

Thanks again guys

Never trust anything mate just because it comes out of a box and is new.

Always go with gut feeling and if the original diagnoses was a sensor and it did not cure the problem then assume that replacement sensor is duff. Stick with the original diagnoses and quite often sensors etc are best bought as oem, unless you know a reliable source that can vouch for replacement ones.

Glad you got it back on the road

Update to my update lol!!!

So done 200 miles this week trying to bed in my new clutch.. Car has been running beautifully.. maybe running a little rich and can smell petrol!! I have new coils and sparks coming next week so looking forward to that... However tonight hit a glitch...

Car broke down on the way home from work on the busiest round about in Hull lol!! Was rather embarrassing so say the least.. The Bitch isn't exactly the most inconspicuous car... AA read the codes P0340.. bank one cam position sensor (knew this anyway as the Slip lights came on), the exact same sensor that I replaced last week to get the car running.. I am going to replace the sensor again along with a new bank 2 also.

Question for the techs out their.... why does my car keep eating cam sensors?? what the F*** is causing the failure on these sensor (the timing chain is new, and obviously timed up so can't be this)

and where shall I get new ones from as Amazon obviously isn't a decent source??

Thanks in advance

I run my own garage. Many times a new 'out of the box' sensor has failed before its been fitted. I check all sensors now using autodata test parameters before I fit them. also, I try to get OEM sensors for all makes now. They are expensive but seem to work. If you own a Zafira 1.8 and buy a cheap coil pack, it will not last the year out! You have been warned.
