Nissan IDx is super-dead, but parts may live on in FWD platform

“IDX is an interesting project; a show car that received good reception. But, to go from concept to production, the reality always kicks in,†Loing said about the future of IDx as we saw it revealed in Tokyo.

The reality is auto manufacturers are finding it difficult – or impossible – to build a small, rear-wheel drive performance vehicle and make money. Either a current platform, like that of the 370Z, needs to be shrunk down, or a whole new platform needs to be engineered to serve one niche vehicle.

I don't think this was a surprise. And I wasn't really a fan of it anyway...

When even BMW go FWD, you know that the future of cheap RWD cars is in peril.

I suspect the reason we haven't seen power versions of the Toyobaru is that the regular versions aren't selling enough to justify the niche market they'd enter at the price they will have to be. Be afraid for the 370 successor, be very afraid.

Unless you really want 4WD and upwards of £40K, I guess.

Or a power version is just going to end up at a stupid price point as the na version was too expensive in the first place, only in my opinion of course :)

Is that not what I said? ;)

Sorry, didnt read it right :)

Yes :)

I also dont go for the argument of "build cost", the Mx5 was just over £14k 25 years ago, the new one £18500.

MX5 is a good example, its an awesome little car and its great fun (under powered, but its still so much fun to drive).... and its a shame as I always really liked the IDx as modding platform.

Awesome rendering above :)

Absolutely love that render!! That is what sold me on the car.... I did see the Concept IDx at Goodwood and it looked very good. I really hope Nissan makes it.

I quite like it's quirky throw back 70's feel to the design.

Most definitely!! 70s design and modern reliability :)

Who is going to buy that dull looking monstrosity in hearing aid beige colour in the op's post though, at least the Gt86 looks reasonable to start with.
