Engine Stutter

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, I need some help. I was driving my car home last night after it sat in the airport for the weekend. It was well warmed up and I was accelerating from a restricted speed limit on the motorway. As I was accelerating the car stuttered twice severely like it had hit the rev limiter. I'm 99% sure it didn't. Don't think i was that high up the revs.

I drove on and when the motorway cleared I accelerated through the gears with no issue. Further on my journey it seems to stutter a couple of times momentarily while at constant throttle. It felt as if it was running out of fuel. There's half a tank in it. It seemed to happen again this morning once I think at low speed <20mph.

Any thoughts as to what it could be?

A quick Update.

When I started the car to leave work the idle was a little rough. On the way home the engine light came on but was still driving ok so thought I could get it to the garage in the morning. A couple miles later it started to get worse very hesitant on partial throttle/ steady cruising throttle less than 25%. It was ok when accelerating and above 2.5k rpm. 8 miles later and it was much worse and cut out when going over a speed bump at the supermarket. I did my shopping and when I came out I barely got out of the car park and had to call the AA the car was undrivable with no throttle response.

The AA diagnosed P0171 right bank too lean. It certainly didn't smell lean. It seams like the car is overfueling to compensate for the erroneous lean reading. They cleared it and it came up again no improvement. The car is in a nissan stealership at the moment as it was the nearest garage and open 17.40.

I'll update when I know more.

engine is not getting enough fuel, or the engine is getting to much air.

The other possibility if that there is an air leak or "unregistered" air entering the engine, either from the intake or exhaust. Make sure the air intake from the filter to the engine is good and secure.
