essces56 Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Has anyone any advice for a decrepit old wimp who can't stand English Winters and is putting the Z under wraps before fleeing the "sceptred isle" for a few months. For example, should the battery be disconnected and if it is will the alarm go off? Or if it isn't will the alarm still go off when it discharges? Any other tips welcome. Thanks. Quote
R35LEE Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 If your putting it in the garage buy a good 'Intelligent' trickle charger Quote
RafsZed Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I know exactly what you need its called a CTEK battery conditioner, about £35 on ebay, it will keep your battery charged up and in tip top condition, google it, its a great piece of kit, just plug it in and leave it. Quote
R35LEE Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Ye, C-Tek ones are ok and they have a terminal plug you can fit to the battery so its quick and easy every time you want to store the car Quote
firemansim Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 +1 on the battery conditioner. Also put an extra 20psi in the tyres to stop any flat spots. Quote
Flex Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Dont leave the handbrake on incase it imprints your discs Quote
R35LEE Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Tell it everything is going to be ok and you will be back soon! Quote
jumping350 Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Leave it in gear when you leave handbrake off lol 1 Quote
Flex Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Remember to take it out of gear when you start it up too Quote
RafsZed Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Wrap it in a blanket and intall a nice electric fire in the garage. Quote
M13KYF Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 drop the windows if disconnecting the battery Quote
Richf Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Buy some moth balls and wrap them in a rag and stuff then under the seats and around the spare wheel etc , this will stop mice etc making a home in the car they hate the smell Not sure whether the fuel tank is plastic or metal if its plastic run it low if its metal fill it up Quote
LRF4N Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Iv heard a few mechanics say cars can develop problems when left lying in a garage. They said start it up every week and take it for a short drive to keep everything moving Quote
R35LEE Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Seals can contract & perish etc over long periods and when in the cold then when started seals blow etc. Starting periodically helps but not just left running at idol for prolonged periods because the oil pressure stays low which isn't the best for engine wear. Getting a friend to start the car and run it up once a month would be ideal Quote
Richf Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Starting and letting it run is not good for the car , causes condensation to build up , better just to leave it alone or take it for a drive on a sunny day. Most bikers leave their bikes for 3 or 4 months every year without issue 1 Quote
