Trax 2013 @ Silverstone - Sunday 8th September

Recommended Posts

If your track time becomes available then I'll not be able to do it now.

I put the car into Nissan at 9.00am this morning for a 9.30 booking to do a 2 hour maximum job and I didn't get picked up until 10am and the car was still stood there. I then get a call at 11am saying that I won't get the car back until teatime. I needed the car this afternoon, hence why I booked it in first thing. I asked what the point of me being there with the car 30 mins before the appointment was if they hadn't even had it on the ramps, and the guy just says that they have 80 cars in today and that they should have told me that the car would be in all day.

Basically all bollocks, they should tell me what time the ramp will be available and then I can bring the car in, rather than my car taking up space in their tiny car park.

Next up......OV53 creates a thread asking about specialists in the Sunderland/Newcastle area.

I will however take that spare entry ticket and a stand ticket should it become available.

Finished it last night, but then had a nightmare last night that I'd not properly scraped the old gasket off the plenum flange and had to take it all off again tonight. Turned out I had done it right, so straight back on it went. Anyway, a few progress shots for you guys to show what I've been doing.

New Air Filters and breather filter for the crank case now I've deleted the PCVs.

Full PCV delete and powder coated cam covers while the plenum was off.

Polished it all back up again and now it looks pretty

Well looks like it might still be fubar! Just took it out for a spirited run and it's smoking blue on boost and when I came back from the spirited run, it's smoking blue on idle (Not tonnes, but enough to not be good) from the drivers exhaust. Also, when it's hot after the spirited run, revving it causes blue smoke from both exhausts, not just the drivers side. This does lend some credence to the theory it might still just be burning off residual oil left in the exhausts from all the oil that's been put down them over the last year, as the exhausts came from a car that spat it's guts down the exhausts and with my PCV issues I put a fair bit down there myself (About 3 litres of oil per hundred miles I worked out).

Sadly, I probably won't be on the track tomorrow, unless I decide it's worth it, since if the engines going to blow anyway, it may as well happen whilst I'm having some fun with it, but essentially I'm left with limited options as to the problem. My preferred one is stated above, residual oil, which is only being burned off properly when the exhausts are actually hot enough, I have more than one scored bore, buggered ring, shredded valve stem seal, on both banks, or both my turbos are shagged. The turbos are unlikely, as they are both recently refurbished with stepped oil seals and new garrett parts, however everything is possible, as we ended up with some very fine metal shavings in our engine, from an oversight after the plenum was polished and it wasn't cleaned out before it was put on the car. We think some of these ended up in the oil, although upon doing several oil changes to try and remove them, I didn't spot any at all in the oil to be fair.

Gunna drive it to the show, take it on the first track session unless it's smoking it's tits off by the time we get there and if it blows up, you lot can help me push it to the gate and I'll call the AA, lol. If I get black flagged because it gets bad, I'll sell my second track time.

In theory you won't be anywhere near me if I'm in front, but if you're in front, I'll have to pass you at some point. Lol

To be honest, there is absolutely no oil coming out of the exhaust at all, just smoke. If it blows up that will probably still remain true to be honest.

Having spoken to a couple of people now I'm quite confident it's just burning off residual oil.

Sorry mate no, I hadn't realised you definitely wanted it. Next year we will start the organisation of this event much earlier and get plenty of tickets and passes.

lmao, to be fair, I think your car is a lot more prepared for the track than mine, as I've spent a long time trying to fix issues this last couple of months, so I'll not take that bet :D

I'm pretty sure it's just residual oil in the exhausts now, which is why there are no big clouds of the stuff, only happens on full boost (i.e. being forced out with high temps through the exhaust) and when it's red hot, again, exhaust red hot from lots of boost so burning off the oil.

We will see though I guess. Fingers crossed.

Good to catch up & meet a few new faces today. Didn`t stay all that long as I was really tired.

I`ve got to be honest I was really disappointed with the track session, a) they were only using the short National circuit (to be expected at such an event really), B) the what I thought was going to be a 30min session turned out to be a 20min session of which ended up being 13minutes including the stupidly slow sighting lap

I was quite glad of the 20 minute session to be fair, considered ending it early myself in the last couple of laps, lol. I was dissapointed that they only used the National track, as it's far too short and boiled my discs very quickly, not to mention far more acceleration after far more breaking, where the GP circuit flows much better, without the big massive turn after maggots and I'd have had less trouble with both discs and smoking I think.

Was great to meet some new guys and of course see some I already knew. If you guys are with us next year, it should be far better, as we'll get it planned sooner and have more people on the stand. I am definitely loving these mixed stands though, just need to get more of the 240 and 260 guys involved now. Potentially a Z31 or two and another 280zx would be nice :D

You two did so well escaping when you did as it pi**ed it down from 1pm!!!

Was great to catch with real people again!

I agree, track sessions too short and far too many on the track at once.

When those pace cars went into the pit lane it was a cross between Wacky Races and a Demo Darby!

Took me four or five laps to overtake the slower cars and get some clear track.

Really enjoyed the day until the rain and thanks once again to Hollowpoint for getting it together.

Hope your car gets better soon mate!!
