Greg Warnes Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 A bit of science to Busters practical work. The RCA's (the bits buster removed) usually output 2 or 4 Volts. The speaker outputs on car stereos can be up to 12 volts. So in theory your pushing a higher voltage signal into the Bose amp, resulting in a Louder output (although if you turn it up to far you may distort the signal or start losing the higher frequencies) Simples. Robboo Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Just wanted to quickly say I had problems with quiet volume on a alpine headunit and this trick worked perfectly! Turn the volume up only a couple numbers and it gets loud quickly! Much better Thanks guys Quote
Mooresy14 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Did you do the Splicing thing Robboo and cut the wires and then solder? I am going to attempt it this week. 1 Quote
spursmaddave Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 You could heatshrink if your soldering skills are not all that.... Quote
Mooresy14 Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I have no idea what that is Dave, so will get my old man to solder for me!! haha Quote
Robboo Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Did you do the Splicing thing Robboo and cut the wires and then solder? I am going to attempt it this week. Yep cut the RCA plugs off, stripped the wires down till I saw the coloured wire inside and the ground wire which is just copper inside the original black wire so be careful not to cut these off when you strip them back! Then cut the speaker plug off and just matched the colour wires, tied them together and soldered Job done Quote
BulletMagnet Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 So basically we are eliminating signal voltage loss via connectors? Quote
buster Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Glad you all approve of my little mod Quote
spursmaddave Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Glad you all approve of my little mod It's fantastic mate you deserve a medal Of course anyone with any sense will just fit a new amp anyway Quote
BulletMagnet Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 That's what I am hoping to do down the line...and subs and speakers Quote
buster Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 (edited) Glad you all approve of my little mod It's fantastic mate you deserve a medal Of course anyone with any sense will just fit a new amp anyway sod the expence i ve done both now though the amp only fires the 12inch sub we fitted Edited January 24, 2013 by buster Quote
spursmaddave Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 That's what I am hoping to do down the line...and subs and speakers Well worth it mate, it's not until you change it all that you realise how puny the Bose stuff is Quote
Mooresy14 Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Ok so the volume isn't that bad as found out the back speakers aren't on. But I can't get 5:1 ie I can only have 2 from and 2 back speakers or sub woofer and 2 front? Anyone had this problem? Apparently the head unit only has 2 pre outs? Will this splicing do the trick???? Quote
drginger Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Would just like to thank buster for this awesome mod, did it today and it has transformed my stereo, so loud and crisp with no distortion! Before I had a line booster and it was boosting the rear so the front barely did a thing but now the front speakers are so much better. This is most definitely worth doing!! Only thing is I can't get my steering wheel controls to work despite getting the 29-020 lead so I think the control box itself might be buggered! Quote
flamez Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 does this mod just return the loudness of the original bose sound? or does it make it even louder? Quote
un1eash Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 It makes it loud enough you dont need to turn the volume upto full. Quote
drginger Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 (edited) I would say louder, its a completely different beast! Edited March 20, 2013 by drginger Quote
flamez Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 So after reading this thread I didnt even bother trying the RCA's I chopped them straight off my loom and did the mod before fitting my headunit. I have slight hiss and turn on pop on low volume, but it is hitting a bit harder than the stock headunit. The top end is better, i can actually tell i'm running tweeters now. I think the sub AMP is a bit too powerful for the sub now though I might look for a free air 10 to swap in. 1 Quote
shamoss Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Sorry if this is a bit of a noob question but i have fitted a kenwood HU and experiencing the lack of volume problem. I'm just wondering if you cut off the RCAs will you still be able to configure the pre outs as before? For e.g. set up the crossovers and the subwoofer? Quote
flamez Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 the pre outs are no longer being used, but the bose system already handles the xover points and sub for you. Just wont be able to tune it yourself. Quote
davedutch Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Buster, thanks for starting this thread and Ian, thanks for the idiot guide. Just fitted my head unit using this guide and it sounds great. Just off for a test drive (any excuse) Quote
Scott TMN Posted April 27, 2014 Posted April 27, 2014 Just done this also, HUUUGE difference. So pleased with my HU now! Thanks a lot! 1 Quote
