Daryl Posted June 20, 2011 Share Posted June 20, 2011 Got chatting to chap at work about streaming stuff from your Mac to your Humax HDR box. He said download the PS3 MS (done) and its easy. It appears to be as far removed from that,as i am from being a astro physicist! Can someone please help me! I can get it to detect my Wii,but have no idea where to go from there. My Humax HDR has a cabled link to my router,and my Wii is wireless linked. It can be temperamental as sometimes Windows can reject it or your router's security may not like it. I have just bought a new PC so have't really tried it yet. You can get a firmware hack to stream from the Foxsat to a media player, but not heard of doing it the other way around. Chris`I Posted June 21, 2011 Share Posted June 21, 2011 The ethernet connection on the HDR for now (without hacks) is just to allow connection to the net for things like BBC iPlayer. There is a hack out there to allow the HDR to become the server so you can stream off it to other players around the house, but I havent heard of anything doing it the other way. The only way I know of getting content through the HDR is to set up a NAS connected to the USB connection and steam via that, but it has to be in the right format. I have it hooked up to my HP ProLiant server which is running FreeNAS with 4TB RAID1 so my data is backed up. http://www.playonhd.com/en/?upn=product ... playonhdm2 I contemplated an Apple TV before I bought the PlayOn Mini but to get what I wanted required hacking the Apple TV and putting custom firmware on it, the PlayOn just works out the box perfectly for me. TomS Posted June 21, 2011 Share Posted June 21, 2011 If you buy the standalone unit you connect it to your TV via HDMI and then you have two choices for getting the content onto the TV. 1. Plug in USB HDD to the PlayOn. 2. Connect the PlayOn to the same network your laptop is on, share the folder on your laptop then the PlayOn will find it. You can do this via ethernet or buy a wireless dongle for the PlayOn. if you want to stream HD stuff (720/1080p) you won't be able to do it over wireless. You will either have to have the media stored on a USB HDD or have the PlayOn and laptop connected to a router/switch via ethernet cable. One of the main reasons I went with the PlayOn over the Apple TV was the interface, ease of use, and the fact that out of the box it can play pretty much any file type(avi, mp4, wmv, mkv, iso). TomS Posted June 21, 2011 Share Posted June 21, 2011 Yeah it should work over your network then. Depends on the homeplugs, what make are they and 85mbps or 200mbps? I think the lower might struggle to stream 1080p. TomS Posted June 21, 2011 Share Posted June 21, 2011 Before I had the PlayOn I used to use my macbook -> PS3 via PSMS which worked great but some files struggled to get transcoded on the fly. If you have a PS3 then you won't need the PlayOn for majority of files, you can just use PSMS on your mac. You just have to set the network adaptor the correct one, add folders to PSMS and your PS3 should pick the folder up. For my AppleTV I ran/traced RJ45E cables through my walls to my hub in my office. I did three, one for the AppleTV, one for the PS3 and One for my TV.... What's a powerline? (Says the computer geek!) We installed a casino with these, each machine had one to retro fit the network. Worked beautifully, so we left. Next day a 10-12 ... the whole network went down... and again 5-8... Same hte next day... and the next... was weird. Went back to look.... and between 10-12 and 5-8 the chefs in the kitchen turned on the extractor fans.... which killed the network! andlid Posted June 22, 2011 Share Posted June 22, 2011 a, didn't read the whole thread (sorry) b, I use the following for streaming (found the windows media server couldn't index my movies and mp3's) xbmc < class bit of software. Can stream from that to anything that supports streaming protocol, I did find that anything from my wifi couldn't connect to the stream server. It's due to it not broadcasting/multicasting properly even though the physical wire and wifi are on the same subnet it seems that the router blocks it. (Cisco from UPC) I had an assus router lying around so used that on the inside and upgraded the firmware to version 3.0 (experimental) that forwarded the packets properly! to see if you have any issues with that part you can plug both the client and server in on the wired network, if that works you know it's due to the wifi side of the router. If you got a htc desire (android) then you cna download the xbmc remote control and control everything via the desire like a remote (handy and pretty geeky) if you need any hands on help pop me a PM. cheers a Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
