MRH 350Z Posted February 26, 2010 Share Posted February 26, 2010 A start up problem. There are some similar posts... but not exact? Couldn't start the car yesterday. Key turns... but nothing happens (no engine crank and the power cuts). Everything else is at is should be. Battery is good... reading 12V going to the solenoid; reading 12V going to the starter motor... but nothing!? Got it started using a push start and then drove home (25 miles). Got home turned the engine off and then restarted it and it worked fine... several times. I will have it looked at (under warranty?) but I just wondered if anyone else has had this problem. The solenoid seemed fine so I am assuming it was the starter motor that was faulty..? Any advice out there? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

When testing the solenoid etc. there was a very clear audible 'click' which I interpreted as that part of the engine trying to do its job..? 350 Russ Posted February 26, 2010 Share Posted February 26, 2010 i had a similar thing, when i bought my car there wasnt a strap holding the battery down and when it would move around it would make a loose connection sometimes and when i tried to start it all the lights would come and and be fine then when i turned the key, 'click' and everything died, i had to move the battery back to the front of its enclosure and hey presto! hope this helps! MRH 350Z Posted April 9, 2010 Author Share Posted April 9, 2010 For the sake of completeness and just in case anyone searches for STARTER MOTOR PROBLEM in the future: Car failed to start. Battery fine; power being delivered to solenoid (detected by audible click when turning the key) but no engine crank at all. Started with a bump start. Worked fine for a week. Stopped working again. Then worked intermittently for another week or so. Took the car to Nissan (Evans Halshaw Leeds) but in typical fashion it worked fine for them so they advised me they could do nothing because they can't diagnose a problem if it is not present when they look at it (makes sense; but obviously didn't help me very much!) All my reading suggested there was a problem with the starter motor (either: 1. faulty hold-on lead, 2. worn bushes, or 3. worn pinion/flywheel? The second one in particular might explain the intermittent failure?) Decided to have the starter reconditioned anyway (there was no obvious fault upon inspection) and it has worked fine since (touch wood!) A new starter from Nissan costs about £540 + VAT by the way!! Potentially a very annoying problem; when the car works some times and not others; you can't rely on it; and garages are telling you they can't do anything because there is nothing wrong!
