no more stone chips ?

When a BMW 335i owner in Munich became bored with his black coupe, he hired a team to wrap it in white tape. Two days later, he drove home in his refreshed "Alpine White" coupe (with an M3-appearing black roof). No, it's not normal tape. It's a special 3M wrap, and the process is known as "foiling." Apparently, the German military has been using the process (with an olive drab tape) for some time now. Likewise, the process is popular with race teams and taxi companies. Available in countless colors, the tape itself is thick enough to protect the paint from minor chips and nicks, and it can be left adhered to the surface for 3-4 years without damage (!). Adhesion isn't a problem either, as the tape can even withstand an automatic car wash without peeling off.

Vinyl wrap then, basically. There's loads of companies that make it in patterns as well, can be more effective than chucking stickers on a car but it's a shame it costs as much (sometimes more) than a re-spray.

I once (before a JAE where I was hoping for a good result in the concours and had plastered the car in some seriously decent wax) drove a good 2 hours with clingfilm stuck to the front and wings. No flies, no dirt, and just whipped it off when I got there! :D

am i being dumb but I don't really see why you'd wrap your car in vinyl like that. Is the idea to actually change the colour rather than have a respray? It can't be to protect if from stone chips as basically you're stuck with it like that so whats the point in protecting the black car underneath that nobody will ever see. You can't exactly peel it off and stick it back on again on a whim?

This is true, but I imagine you could buff it up with AG Vinyl and Rubber care quite quickly! In fact, the more I think about it........ :teeth:

looks like we might have a guinea pig? :)

I might have to do a bit of research......
