GIXXERUK Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 When a BMW 335i owner in Munich became bored with his black coupe, he hired a team to wrap it in white tape. Two days later, he drove home in his refreshed "Alpine White" coupe (with an M3-appearing black roof). No, it's not normal tape. It's a special 3M wrap, and the process is known as "foiling." Apparently, the German military has been using the process (with an olive drab tape) for some time now. Likewise, the process is popular with race teams and taxi companies. Available in countless colors, the tape itself is thick enough to protect the paint from minor chips and nicks, and it can be left adhered to the surface for 3-4 years without damage (!). Adhesion isn't a problem either, as the tape can even withstand an automatic car wash without peeling off. no more stone chips I looked at this sort of thing with a view to going matt black but boy its expensive. Ekona Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Vinyl wrap then, basically. There's loads of companies that make it in patterns as well, can be more effective than chucking stickers on a car but it's a shame it costs as much (sometimes more) than a re-spray. I once (before a JAE where I was hoping for a good result in the concours and had plastered the car in some seriously decent wax) drove a good 2 hours with clingfilm stuck to the front and wings. No flies, no dirt, and just whipped it off when I got there! Quote
Ekona Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Yup, that'll be the stuff! You can see why I ran the risk of looking an absolute tit driving up the A1 for it! Quote

nixy Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 am i being dumb but I don't really see why you'd wrap your car in vinyl like that. Is the idea to actually change the colour rather than have a respray? It can't be to protect if from stone chips as basically you're stuck with it like that so whats the point in protecting the black car underneath that nobody will ever see. You can't exactly peel it off and stick it back on again on a whim? Quote
GIXXERUK Posted August 8, 2008 Author Posted August 8, 2008 If you get fed up with it you just unwrap it Quote
nixy Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 so it would be used as a colour change with the added bonus of no stone chips then? If it costs nearly as much as a respray you wouldn't be unwrapping it that hastily would you. Quote
GIXXERUK Posted August 8, 2008 Author Posted August 8, 2008 much easier to have custom design ......like this http://necromanc.blogspot.com/2007/09/l ... ingly.html Quote
H5 Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 I don't think it costs anything like a respray though....... Quote

nixy Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 wonder how long it lasts and if scratches etc are an issue. can you imagine getting too close to a hedge or finding a cat on your bonnet one morning! Yikes! Quote
H5 Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 This is true, but I imagine you could buff it up with AG Vinyl and Rubber care quite quickly! In fact, the more I think about it........ Quote

GC350z Posted August 8, 2008 Posted August 8, 2008 This is basically the same as paintshield or ventura only coloured instead of clear. I'd do this in a heart beat if I could get the blackboard colour that Brabus have been using of late. Quote
