Willbof Posted April 8 Posted April 8 Here we go then. New member and new to 350z ownership. Thought I'd start a little thread on my battle with corrosion. Looks like I'm in for a hell of a fight, disappointed how much I found under all the plastic covers. Quote
Keith D Posted April 8 Posted April 8 I'm surprised the rear axle managed to stay attached! Under full load I could see the car parting ways! Keep the faith, many years ago (far too many to mention) I turned a rusty wreck of a capri into a concours winner. I'd quite like to start another rust bucket project to keep alongside my 370z Quote
Willbof Posted April 8 Author Posted April 8 I know, glad I decided to look into it. It's been getting driven quite spirited since I got it. How the hell it has an MOT I'll never know, that has happened recently. It looks bad but it's only really that area albeit on both sides. Started the strip down today but waiting to get her on the lift to make life easier. Quote
Willbof Posted April 17 Author Posted April 17 Finally got the car in the air today and got stripping. Glad I did, looks like I'm just in time to save this old girl! Subframe off, tank off and I found a few things that definitely need replacing. Day of wire brushing tomorrow. 1 Quote
davey_83 Posted April 17 Posted April 17 She's in good hands now, looking forward to the updates Quote
Willbof Posted April 26 Author Posted April 26 Been slacking a bit with the updates but it's been full steam ahead on the car. Pretty much finished the repairs underneath, just cleaning off the old crust and painting left really. There was a thick coating of "metal" over everything, I assume it's been treated with converter in the past leaving this thick crusty nasty stuff. I literally had to chip it off with a chisel to get something to weld to. Loads of chassis repairs from the kidney brace mounts back to the subframe mounts. Many times I contemplated giving up but she's coming together now. Not the tidyest of jobs but she's solid now. 2 Quote

Willbof Posted April 26 Author Posted April 26 Ewww, the cats were actually welded to the "custom" exhaust. 🤮 Quote

Willbof Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 Tank back in which has covered almost all my hard work! Also doing some science to see if I can clean up some rusty bits. Quote
Willbof Posted May 9 Author Posted May 9 (edited) Been super busy with boring life stuff and not had much time for the zed but she's taking shape now. Still waiting on some sill patches and that's the underside pretty much done. Many new parts and much refreshing of old stuff, can believe the price of standard parts on these cars! Having promised myself I wouldn't get back into drifting and heading over to the initiate show I've been ordering bits again 🙄 Edited May 9 by Willbof 3 Quote
Willbof Posted May 28 Author Posted May 28 Been a while. Still waiting on the sill panels to come in from Japan and some steering rods from Australia. I have however received some bits back from powder coat which I'm very happy with. Decided to get the kidney braces done, even though they were brand new they already showed signs of rusting 🙄 Also received a care package from mishimoto, radiator, fans, intake and oil cooler. Thanks mishimoto for sponsoring the car! 2 Quote
Keith D Posted May 28 Posted May 28 Its coming along well. I've seen mixed views on oil cooler ports on the top / bottom (as you have them). Quote
