Still temped. It may be more sensible to wait a year and get a gen 2 ? I have tried to stop looking for the fast few days but I keep picking up the iPad and viewing.

Get a gen 1, keep it for a year, then get a gen 2? ;)

It's down to you really, but the gen 2 cayman s is not immune to the bore scoring issue either.

The gen 2 has a 2.9pdk model which dont have the issue, like the earlier 2.7, as far as I'm aware. They just cost a bit more.

Find a local porsche Specialist and nip down and have a chat. I'm sure they'd be happy to give you 10 minutes of their time and advice in exchange for you taking your new porsche to them...

Why would a 2.9 auto be immune and not a manual 2.9, from my research into buying a cayman its mainly the 3.4 engines that are effected but early cars all can suffer with the IMS bearing.

2.9 engine isn't DFI, and tbh is a little dull. Doesn't really want to rev, doesn't make a very nice noise, really not their finest hour.

I'd rather have a gen1 3.4 over a gen2 2.9 if I'm honest.

Gen2 cars are as likely to have bore scoring as the 350Z or GT-R is, that is to say it's not common in the slightest.

My apologies.. Was half asleep when I wrote that. To explain what I meant...

Gen1 3.4 can have bore scoring and ims bearing issues

The 2.7 doesn't have the common issues as far as I'm aware

The gen2 3.4 can still have the issue (have a search on the pistonheads forum and find the horror stories)

You can get the later 2.9 engine which doesn't have the issues and I think is an improvement from the earlier 2.7 issue. But from what I've read above they aren't that inspiring to drive?

After much thought and mind changing I can confirm that the z stays for another year í ½í¸, the fear of an £8k rebuild has put me off. I have decided to wait another year and look for a newer model. Thanks for all the comments and information. I will make the most of another summer with a convertible and hope the sun shines.

Can't fault your decision. Keep your eyes peeled for any that come up that have had a rebuild with the upgraded parts... you never know.

Some of the Porsche dealers appear to offer a full inspection and a 2 year warranty. If that warranty includes the IMS and bore scoring then 'possibly' worth the extra they charge just to sleep at night? The Porsche dealers appear to charge around £2K more than alternative dealers for a similar car but you would 'hope' that they do a proper job and only sell decent cars.

Or, if you want, you can pay for the porsche inspection yourself and buy the porsche warranty for the car if you found a car privately.

If you mean IMS, no. It doesn't have the direct injection of the gen2 3.4, but neither does it have the intermediate main shaft design.
