fishfire Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Hi all. My car is booked in for its mot this week but I'm a bit worried it'll fail on the state of the 'W' brace, which (like most) is badly corroded and looks a state! Is this checked as part of the mot? Can I simply remove it before hand if it is? Thanks in advance! Chris Quote
brillomaster Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 well they certainly can't fail what isn't there! and while its off it gives you a chance to clean it up and give a decent coat of rustproof paint before reinstalling. Quote
coldel Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Have a quick google/search on the forum, a few threads up about the W brace - it seems to be a part of the older Zed which is rotting on quite a few cars now. Removing it does not fail you, there are also aftermarket options if you want to replace it altogether. Quote
Randy_Baton Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Mine is pretty bad, but its never failed a MOT. Quote
Zeezeebaba Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Mine passed today. Surface rust isn't anything to worry about. Quote
fishfire Posted September 26, 2016 Author Posted September 26, 2016 Mine looks rotten tbh but I'll run her through and see what's said. Cheers for the heads up Quote
colesl4w Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Just confirming that you can indeed remove it and pass MOT. That's what I have done. Quote
The Trouser Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 It won't fail an MOT as its not part of the suspension - it just firms up the chassis. Thats what the tech who did my service told me before I had it replaced. He also said it was so rusty he could put his finger through it. I didn't take it off for the MOT and everything was OK Quote

fishfire Posted October 3, 2016 Author Posted October 3, 2016 Well she failed, but not on the W brace. Track rod ends both excessive movement. Get those replaced and back on for retest! Oh as an advisory: slight corrosion of components underside of vehicle 1 Quote
