  1. Im going to have to wait till i get tyres then.. end of March early April possibly.. i have about 2 - 3mm and as i said before the shoulders are cracked. would be a shame to get turned away on my first one.

Worried about buying some Michelin and ruining them but i guess thats part of the price you pay..

The airfield looks good but do they do beginners only days?

I did my first one with MSV on a novice day, really enjoyed it. You won't be solidly lapping all day on your first one as the adrenaline gets a bit much and you'll have to rest plenty cos you'll be knackered!

Elvington is based on an old airfield, but the track is properly laid tarmac so you'll just get "normal" wear. First days wear on track will be very minimal, drifting of course a lot more.

I didn't get insurance, as long as you drive defensively, and be aware of whats happening around you, there's very little chance of hitting anyone else. The main risks come from not listening to the car and overcooking a corner due to overheating tires/brakes or being ham-fisted.

Open pit lane days are fine for a first one, most organisers have bookable circuit tuition and it's rare that everyone is out at the same time, and by the time you throw in a few black flags an lunch, you'll get a few breaks!

  2. It looks lovely :)

I did a quick google as it did take my fancy but ouch.....25k (new) for a diesel golf! What is this world coming too

Yeah, expensive to buy, but I expect also has the best residuals too. Thats the choice you make.

  3. I know, I'm a lucky man. Fran made me pies the other day too, what more can you reasonably ask for eh? ;)

Hopefully the Zed can come through it all scratch free, but I'm mentally preparing myself to not let any knocks spoil the trip! We're staying just outside the Paris peripherique, on the Versailles side. Think I might be driving to that hotel outside rush hour!

  4. Well, that's most of the trip sorted out. The Lady has happily agreed to the driving bit as long as there's no silly length days in the car, so we're trying to keep stints down to 3hrs or so, and have decent stops in fewer locations than you would on a total driving holiday. We're going mid July, for just over three weeks. :D

    The itinerary is as follows:

    Cumbria > Oxford area

Oxford > Portsmouth> Overnight ferry to Le Havre

    Le Havre > Paris

    Paris > Dijon area

    Dijon > Feisch (Switzerland)

    Fiesch > Lenno, Como.

Lenno > Grindelwald (Eiger!) +One night in the Monchjoch Hut at 10,000ft!

    Grindelwald > Baden-Baden

Baden-Baden > Cologne (And 'ring visit hopefully)

    Cologne > Ijmuiden

Ijmuiden > Overnight Ferry > Newcastle

    Newcastle > Home!

I'm looking for a recommendation for a nice overnight stop in the Dijon area, if anyone has any particular choices.

  5. Just for everyone info - It looks like the Boofsquire rack has been out of production since 2011 - but I have located one that looks like it may work and I think they have a UK distributor, will be giving them a call in the near future but here is a link to the website http://www.birdautomotive.com/ and also another solution that Ive just found that im looking in to is https://www.seasucker.com/

Saris racks get a good write up, should fit ok, as the back of the Zed is kind of saloon shaped. Any external rack will scuff the paint up though!

  6. Well the Kona is basically old stock now as it isn't a current model. The Trance is a better bike, I've demo'ed it, and you'll be able to get the current 2014 model. Also consider the Trek Fuel if you fancy the Giant. They are both regular trail bikes, but will take a bit of AM abuse as long as you're not too fast or brutal with them.

Consider that a budget full sus might weigh 32lbs+ where as a hardtail at the same money will likely be at least 25% lighter. Worth considering if you've been out of it for a bit.

  7. Hi folks,

I am in the market for a new mountain bike. I haven't done xc/trials in 5 years or so and want to get back into it :-)

I'm looking around £1200 for a full suspension xc/trials bike, possibly an all mountain and happily to pay a little more. Being drawn towards the giant trance but also the canyons but don't like the fact they are mail order as can't try it. Can anyone help?

You won't get a good, reliable full susser for 1200 unless you go mail order unfortunately, unless you buy second hand or get lucky in the sales. You could have a great, lightweight hardtail for that though. If you go that route, get 29" wheels and it'll do nearly anything anyway

If you go mail order, you could just try finding someone who has one, or emailing the manufacturer for sizing guides. Do you have any models in mind?

  8. I call BS. No way would or could a council earmark properties that haven't even been built yet for people that aren't even in the country yet, not when the waiting list is so long already. They would be under immense pressure to get that list down as low as possible, not hold properties back for immigrants.

Why would they? How does it benefit anyone? The council cannot afford to have properties left empty as they have had their grants from the government cut already, so need to fill houses ASAP.

I'm with Dan on this. It'll be like one of those stupid email memes that have been doing the rounds for about 10 years.
