Theres been a lot in the papers of late about brown being under serious pressure from his ministers to scrap the proposed car tax rises - basically a tiny little bit of light at the end of the tunnel. If he does a u-turn on that then that would only leave the ever increasing petrol prices as our main problem.

I think you're plan will work Shire. At the moment (i.e 2008) its only post -06 cars that are affected by the high road tax but this is about to change next year - my understanding was that pre-06 cars would be going up to £440 in March 09 then £455 in 2010. So if you can get 12 months tax at the tail end of this year or early next year and do the same the next year then you wont end up paying full whack till 2011.
