  1. To get the 2.3 second 0-60 time on the P100D you have to have battery warm, which if it's zero degrees outside will take time. Non 'ludicrous' mode I believe is a rather pedestrian 3 second 0-60 time. My X is like a 1.0 Nissan Micra in comparison at 4.9 seconds 0-60. Still hoping the a sub 2 second 0-60 time will be offered soon, but I believe current tyre compounds is the limiting factor not the power.
  2. ^ Watching that just makes me miss our old car, the loaner is alright but really could have done with 6 seats this weekend and black seats look so boring compared to the white. At least our replacement car is now built but still another 6-8 weeks before delivery
  3. This thing must be causing some interest amounts car journalist to make it to the front cover of TopGear magazine, a spot usually reserved for Hypercars and group test :).
  4. Couldnt agree more, everyone should get what they want. The lady of our house paid for her Lexus in full with her own cash and actually contributed 30% of the X costs. She wants a Model 3 to replace the Lexus so am not going to argue, it's her money.....However I might have some influence when ticking the spec sheet. Premium interior/Autopilot I really don't care, it's the 'P' option that will be most of interest.
  5. Kia EV all the way. If my wife was agreeable I would be happy to swap her Lexus for a Leaf tomorrow......But the important bit there is 'her'. She rather have a Lexus hybrid than a full Nissan EV, shes a badge snob am not
  6. CEOs lead a company, if you read the comments many CEOs have made about EVs your see what am talking about. Many hate the idea of building EVs almost as much as you guys, and all want Tesla to flop. Lots of companies are making noise about EVs, but very few are delivering. Nissan-Renualt the major expection. GM have built the Bolt but bizzarly don't seem to want to sell them, and almost treating it like EV1. I guess we'll see in the next few years, but with both Tesla and Nissan (in a few weeks) announcing much more affordable 200 mile range EVs, everyone else better start showing products rather than just talk. It remains to be seen just how much production Jag will be pushing with the iPace. Certainly some think it's a compliance car to allow Jag not to be penalised by the EPA in the US. The fact the iPace isn't even been built by Jag seems to back that up, but I hope not. A 10-20k production cap would be such shame for a good looking EV. Again we will know soon enough.
  7. Am pretty sure the CEOs of Kodak, Nokia, Wang computers all thought the same ;). Some of the big names in car manufacturing will go the same way as those companies, those that survive will be the ones that can innovate, Nissan will be fine, but Toyota am not sure.
  8. The problem most manufactures haven't realise is just how hard it is to mass produce batteries for a cheap price. Tesla is burning cash to get their own battery factory up and running because they know without a 100% guaranteed battery supply you might as well shut down the production line. It's like building a petrol car but not been in control of engine manufacturing/supply. LG is currently suppling VW with batteries for eGolf, BMW i3, and Hyundai Ioniq and already struggling to meet demand, even though those cars sell in tiny numbers compared to what Tesla is pushing for with Model 3. A lot of manufactures are heading for a massive shock when they realise their current manufacturing lines are essentially useless for making EVs because the tech and skill required to assemble an electric motor and battery pack is very very different from combustion cars. https://qtelegram.com/hyundai-would-have-underestimated-the-success-of-its-electric-ioniq-and-is-currently-struggling-to-meet-demand-due-to-too-low-battery-production/7945
  9. The iPace is coming, and I have half an eye on it. The specs are pretty decent 90kWh (same as any Tesla), two motors for AWD, decent looking interior. Key though will be price. Jag initial hinted at pricing of 15% more than a F-Pace (£50K), but more recently making noises along the lines of 'it'll be worth it' so may end up close to X pricing (£70K+). People are badge snobs, but people also need to look at their bank accounts. At £70K your looking at 6-7 seater cars with all the utility that comes with it, Q7/RangeRover/XC90/Model X. iPace is smaller than the F-pace which already less practical than larger SUVs. At £50K the iPace would be half tempting at £70K+ its way over priced, guess we will find out next year. Interestingly the Jag XE starts at £29K, that's for the 4 cylinder diesel in base trim, the full fat V6 is £47K before options. I would say Tesla have priced the Model 3 almost perfectly interms of competing with BMW/Merc/Jag/Audi in the small saloon market.
  10. Well that might not be far off, Musk is now talking about moving motor production for the S/X over to the Gigafactory to make more space for Model 3 demand because it's looking like they might hit 700K orders!! From Tesla's point RHD cars simply delay profit/income as the time from finishing production to customer collection is so long. I confirmed the order for our replacement X on the 14th of July, it went it to production on the 4th of August - currently still in production, than there is a 2 week transfer from factory on east coast to west coast, another 4 week on a boat, than 1 more week at Tilburg, 2 more weeks to arrive in UK, before finally getting prepped for delivery. That's 2 months of transit time alone on a car that's already in full RHD production. https://electrek.co/2017/08/07/tesla-model-3-annual-demand-elon-musk/ If North American orders keep on building, RHD delivery times will slip more and more, Tesla will have no interest in diverting resources to RHD production if the production line is rammed, 2020 is now looking optimistic. On the other-hand used Model S prices are falling. A Tesla approved 85S is now going for £45K, that will come with a 4 year 50K warranty. In 12-18 months time if a used facelift S comes in at a sensible price might make a decent alternative for the wife whilst waiting for the 3...... I do like the idea of owning a S and X together whilst waiting for the 3, got to collect them all at some point
  11. Some one has released the EPA testing documents on the Model 3. 80kWh battery, and better efficiency rating than my old Nissan Leaf despite been significantly quicker. Cannot wait to see what the performance of the 'P' version is like. http://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-gets-80-5-kwh-battery-258-hp/
  12. They will be, after the Model Y is done. You better start saving up the pennies, something tells me a 0-60mph time of sub 2 second might just be a tad more expensive than even the current £130k+ P100D X. https://electrek.co/2017/06/13/tesla-roadster-next-gen-elon-musk-maximum-plaid/
  13. Tesla Q2 results were just announced, stock price has gone up 8% apparently on stronger than expected income from S/X sales. International Model 3 production will start 2019 (so I suspect 2020 delivery), pricing structure same as current S/X (which will translate to £27K for base car - a base spec BMW 318i, 4 cylinder, manual, currently lists for £27K before options!!). If RHD delivers look like dragging on longer, and the Model Y is announced (due 2019) I may flip my deposit to a Y, which is what I did with the X (originally had ordered S).
  14. So first I'm stupid for buying an EV because they are expensive, and now the only reason I bought one is to brag about money on the internet to bunch of strangers I have no personal connection to?? I love a good debate, but I thought we were all adults here not a bunch of 5 years old on the school playground, next someone will be asking about how high a wall we can wee over Seriously if you cannot think of an coherent argument to say what's the point of making personal attacks? I should add I'm not the one who started this particular thread, so if you have a problem with discussing EVs maybe take it up with the OP .
  15. When I was offered the settlement check for my written off X I did look at alternatives (iPace in particular) , but when you consider just how lives can be changed in an instant with tragic consequences . Having my family in the safest car on the road really was a no-brainer decision, and why I was willing to put spend another £4.5K of my own money to ensure we got another X as the family wagon. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-40800157 When I saw structure integrity of the Model 3 in a crash test versus the safety combustion car on the market the decision to pre-order the Model 3 became a no-brainer. It very much looks like the Model 3 will follow in the foot steps of the S/X as been one of the safest cars on the planet to have a crash in
  16. Do you really think I've bought at £75K+ brand new car and pre-ordered another £35K+ one to save money?? I'm pretty sure we are all on this forum because we love cars, and the absolute cost of motoring come secondary to the driving experience. I love our X not because it costs pennies to run interim of fuel cost (which isn't a bad thing), I love it because its simply the best car I have ever owned. It can carry my family in safety, move a sofa without problems, but still as fun to blast around a B road as any of my past cars (DC2 Teg excluded). I realised am lucky to be able to afford an EV right now, but that's what the Model 3 is here to do, lower the price of entry.
  17. Which why am amazed out of all the 'issues' you can raise about the cost of an EV someone goes and picks on fuel costs....which there is no argument about just how much cheaper electricity is than petrol :).
  18. A Model 3 is projected to have a real life efficiency of 4.5 miles per kWh (similar to my old Leaf and much better than the X). So 10,000 miles will use 2300kWh. For me with charging the car on E7 rates overnight that translates to a yearly fuel cost of £138. A efficient combustion car doing a real life 40mpg and fuel costing £1.10/l will cost £1250. I'll leave you to do the maths on how many 10% fuel rises it'll take to turn £138 into £1250. And I suspect if you asked Joe Average which if those two sums is easier to budget for the, answer will be obvious. .....actually done the maths, it's 23 consecutive 10% changes needed, so that will take us to 2040....Guess we'll have to wait till than to settle this one :).
  19. A 100% price increase on something that costs 1p translates to an absolute cost increase of 1p. A 1% price increase on something that costs 100p translates to an absolute cost increase of 1p. If you can budget for a 1% cost increase for a product that costs 100p you can afford a multiple 100% increases in price on a product that costs 1p with no planning at all. We can both agree that we don't see eye to eye about EVs. As I keep on saying ultimately what we agree/disagree on is pointless, time will tell how things will change (or not change) :).
  20. A double digit percentage rise in electicty costs will see my fuel bill for the X increase from £120 to £134 for covering 6000 miles. I wonder how far £134 of petrol would get you in a 2.5 ton SUV capable of sub 5 second 0-60 sprints;).
  21. ^ Hopefully the £4.5k EV grant will still be in place. The $ has tanked recently due to Trump, so if he can last till 2019 that would be perfect. If Tesla stick to their Model S pricing conversation, the cheapest 3 will come in at around £27k, that's barely anymore than what I paid for my Z back in 2005, and more than 50% cheaper than a S . The chepeast Tesla has always been the best value one, but a sub 3 second 0-60 time will be hard for me to ignore, having been loaned a P85D S for 48hrs recently it's the kind of unnecessary performance I would love to access on a quite Sunday
  22. I'm off to the states next months, going to see if I can get to see one in real life - though chances will be slim as I'll be on the East coast and not west. Although who knows, the last time I went I managed to see one of the first 100 Model X to come off the production line, ironically at the time I didn't like it and ended up ordering a S.......18 months and I'm waiting for delivery on my second white X, so clearly I cannot make up my mind on these cars at first viewing . What spec you going for? I'm half tended by the barebones base car - which is will have Autopilot 2.0 hardware anyways, and 0-60 in sub 6 seconds. At the same time the yet to be announced 'P' version might be hard to ignore, especially if it does sub 3 second 0-60 time and comes in under £50K . However one thing I've learnt from Tesla ownership the spec sheet and pricing changes on almost quarterly basis. The X options list and pricing has changed three times since we ordered our original car back in April last year. I'm pretty sure the Model 3 options in 2019 will look very different from today......and in a good way :).
  23. The 3 is a great looking car, and the reviews are bordering on fanatical... Apparently makes an Alfa Romeo feel like a 'wet sponge' in a back to back test drive. http://www.motortrend.com/cars/tesla/model-3/2018/exclusive-tesla-model-3-first-drive-review/ But if your wanting an EV this year it wouldn't be a Model 3....the pre order list is around 500k!!! US owners who pre ordered over a year ago are been told late 2018 delivery for AWD versiona. There is 0% change RHD cars will start coming down the line until the vast majority of US pre-order are fulfilled. I don't expect the first RHD cars to be in customer hands till late 2019/2020 :(. Still the timing works for us to replace my wife's hybrid, and after all I have a reputation to keep up as a Tesla fanboy:D
  24. I picked up last years series 6 LG 55inch 4K HDR OELD panel for <£1400 from John Lewis. The picture quality really is second to none. Prices of these OLED panels seem to go down at random times, worth watching the market to see when the next drop happens.
  25. I've already mentioned it shouldn't come to that....Plenty of help groups will be around to help you cope, have a chat with a group of similar minded people, share your thoughts whilst having organic coffee brewed with water purified from the toilet, all taking place in a tree house furnished using nothing but fully organic furniture ;).
