If it was 1910 possibly, since 1911 the house of lords can't reject legislation, they can only send it back down for reworking with a maximum delay of 2 years, adjusted to a maximum 1 year delay since the 1949 changes, after the 1 year delay the commons can force it through anyway as it's on behalf of the electorate.

No, I'm saying that if the only country that did have a referendum on the Lisbon treaty said no, then it shouldn't be forced on that electorate anyway. It was written by professor Alan Johnson. Considering the title of the article is called "Why I am voting Leave, by Professor Alan Johnson" I thought that would be fairly obvious. Maybe you got to the word "Leave" and stopped reading? Oh, unless you mean all the quotes inside the bit I quoted? They all have names next to them also.

The main argument there seems to be "foreign students will be put off", but we have plenty of foreign students from outside the EU as it is, I don't see why they would suddenly think Cambridge and Oxford are useless! And the following argument: The people from the US who have settled here are already from outside the EU... and can settle in the UK... and we're not planning on building a great big wall!

Finally a break from the main stream news and politicians bickering! This is one of the best set of arguments for Leave I've read. It's lengthy but I'd recommend anyone voting to read it. As the author states, it was written in a rush so could use an editor in places, however the arguments seem pretty solid and are backed up with references and examples. That's pretty much where I'm at presently, everyone is saying that economically staying in Europe is the safer option... really? I reckon our economy is likely to be slightly weaker short term and somewhere between the same to stronger mid to long term if we leave. If we stay it's going to be anywhere between a total collapse to just about the same.

I haven't made my mind up yet, I think I'm currently leaning towards leave but not by much... on the remain side of my brain: I'm not a huge fan of Cameron but Boris or Corbyn as the next PM?!? I saw that on Facebook and it genuinely made me laugh!

Even if it was the amount of money raised here wouldn't make my bank manager any happier! I think it would pay for about 12 guests food out of ~150 guests! All donations are going to the charity.

That was exactly my concern and I'm trying to be as fair as possible, I'm quiet impressed with the amount of people saying option 3 though!! Even if we lose a couple of people due to the reduced chance then we'll still raise more for charity I guess. I'll update the first post shortly with details on how to pay etc.

I worked for 6 months on the bit they called spine, the backbone to the whole thing. Basically the NHS/government paid Company A to provide the service, they subcontracted the hardware and support to computer manufacturer B, who then hired contractors through companies C to F. So basically they just wanted bums on seats so that A, B, C...F all got their cut of the government money... I sat there for 6 months with nothing to do! Most boring job I ever had and no surprise it failed. Our motto was "the internet isn't big enough". Anyway, back on topic. A lot of the remain arguments seem to be regarding the economy, the fact that we're better off in the EU and staying in is the option with less risk. I'm not too worried about how the UK will do outside Europe, sure there may be a small recession but we'll likely be stronger in a few years. On the other hand, the percentage of EU GDP to world GDP has almost halved from 30% in 1980 to 16.5% now. France has riots and strikes pretty much daily, could the EU cope with a French bailout a la Greece? What about Spain or Italy? Sure, that might not happen, but to me it seems likelier than the UK failing to thrive on it's own outside the EU.

OK, the first post is now updated with all those who are interested! We almost have double the interest! So, the options are: 1) Stick with 20 @ £20 2) Move to 37 @ £11 3) Move to 37 @ £20 (hey it is for charity!) Opinions from those interested?

Could someone who's more business/tax/economy savvy help me with something? Currently if a UK business is exporting to the EU they pay VAT to the UK, if they're selling outside the EU they don't pay VAT but do pay tariffs according to the local customs which goes to the foreign country. So from a business point of view, assuming that our VAT and their tariffs are vaguely similar there shouldn't be too much difference on the bottom line. From a UK economy point of view, I can see that if the government aren't receiving the VAT then it could be worse. However, lets assume that any tariffs imposed by the EU on the UK would be reciprocated by us, for simplicity say the EU collects 20% on goods we export and we charge 20% on goods imported, considering in April 2016 we exported £25B and imported £41B from the EU, wouldn't we be better off with that arrangement? i.e: We'd get the tariffs on the £41B rather than the VAT on the £25B? Or am I completely wrong here?
