cheap ones do rust on, seen it happen before to members. Be very careful trying to remove them as they can split the valve altogether. Get some good quality replacement ones if when you het them off. Richbrook anti theft ones are vey good

or you could buy a new one and sell the reconditioned one. Your not always guaranteed the old one will refurb. I bought a new one to save having to strip the door down twice and sold the reconditioned one on. Got half the money back against a new one.
