Mudman Posted February 21, 2015 Share Posted February 21, 2015 (edited) Evening All Decided to take the Zed on a run today - First proper one of the year. Needed a few bits for the house so thought I would drive the 2 odd hours to Ikea Nottingham. Fuelled up (Momentum) just after picking the car up and headed to Nottingham. No problems, even did the brake bedding in which cured the steering shudder. Parked up at Ikea got the bits and left about an hour later. My App radio was playing up so at a Red light in Grantham turned the ignition off and restarted as this has worked in the past. Car refused to restart. Was turning over but not catching. Thought may leave it but conscious that the battery on mine even newish isn't the best so called the RAC out. They were out in like 5 minutes. (impressed!) We both thought take the air filter off the pop charger see if it goes. He sprayed some ether up the induction pipe and started first time. Put the filter back on did the paperwork and headed off nervously for the last 60 odd miles to Kings Lynn. Up until the stop, no problems, no lights and no loss of performance. On the way back I now noticed the engine light was on as also the VDC off and SLIP warning lights. I tried to switch the VDC but could not get the light to go out. When I got home tried to restart and same problem wouldn't fire. OK the only thing I have changed (last week) was fitting a plastic snorkel that fits to the heat shield, the car has been up revved but would that make a difference to the chip/fuel air mix ? Also whats the link with the VDC/SLIP lights and the car not starting. I will try to get a code reader tomorrow and see what it says but a bit lost. The car has been supremely reliable for the year I have owned it so wonder if anyone else has a similar experience . Hammerz Posted February 22, 2015 Share Posted February 22, 2015 I had slip and warning lights come on and wouldnt start before, was the cam shaft sensor (or crank shaft sensor). Picked up a replacement from Eurocarparts for around £50-60. Did a search and it says there was a recall for 03-06 cars. I do have a Nissan garage nearby but would prefer one of the traders to work on this. TBH I have a few things that need doing so might just take it to a garage. Just out of interest I called my local Nissan garage. Ran the problem past them, They claim its probably a stretched timing belt chain so that's a first. Also said they would be happy to run a diagnostic at £96.00 Told them that I already had done that and had the codes and would that then tell you if it was a timing belt as I dont think theres a code for a streched timing belt ? . Then started to question me as to when the car was serviced last. Doesn't really fill you with confidence does it, pretty much dismissed the Cam sensor saying its mechanical not electrical. Mudman Posted February 25, 2015 Author Share Posted February 25, 2015 By a sheer twist of fate had to work from home today so during my lunch hour replaced the cam sensor and she started first time literally took 15 minutes and 10 of those was trying to get the old sensor out - what is it with Nissan and harness plugs ? Just for the record this was the successful technique 1. Slide the clip forward as far as it can go 2. Get a terminal or smallish flat head screwdriver and place in the slot in the middle of the green harness 3. Wedge screwdriver up against engine bay and pull back on harness carefully not using the wires 4. Hammerz Posted February 25, 2015 Share Posted February 25, 2015 Glad you got it sorted, Nissan gave me the wrong cam sensor (eventhough i told them it was bank 1 sensor) and then even with the right sensor it took me an age to get the old one unclipped so you did well with 10 minutes! Mudman Posted April 10, 2015 Author Share Posted April 10, 2015 Hi Neil you need a ELM27 code reader off ebay for about a fiver that you pop into the scart like socket (OBDII) then pair with an app. There are many that do this so have a hunt. If you have a JDM then you are a little more restricted on choice than a UK model as I have only found 2 that are compatible with the JDM and you need a BT ELM rather than a WIFI one.
