Knocking coming from the front

The compression rod is also known as the bannana arm, as it is in a banana shape.

Everyone has different names for it, front lower control arm is same as compression rod. All the same thing I believe. I'm changing mine soon and hopefully the knocking goes away.

I also have a knocking/clunking noise, I cannot pin point if it is front of rear.

Had my local garage look at it and they saw my W brace was completely rusted to nothing, so they did that for £300, the knocking was just as bad after that. Now they want to charge me £400 for the rear shocks as they think that will cure it.... Im not rushing into it, I would rather they knew 100% where the noise was coming from, which they should be able to do quite easily, as they deal with this sort of thing day in day out!!

Here is a video I found, the noise I am getting is basically identical to this...

Not sure if that is the sound your getting OP?

Your noise sounds a lot more constant than mine at low speed. I only get the noise on uneven road and when I hit a drain cover or pot hole. Under heavy breaking I a lot getting a wobbling noise.

My noise is there almost constantly, no matter how big the bump! Even on roads that seem smooth and level..

It could be that you just have a more severe case of what I have going on. Get them to check the front and rear control arms. Can be called 'control arm', 'compression arm' I've even heard people calling them wishbones. There a very common problem on these cars which I've gathered from trying to search the forum for my problem.

Another thing you could do is go to a specialist Japanese car garage and get them to check it out. Might be worth the drive to one of the places on here. Someone who's worked on 350z's before is going to be able to help you more. Hope you find the route of your knocking. I will keep you informed wether if my knocking goes after I change my control arm.

Sorry but wtf!! :scare: Should say they did you for £300.

Lot's of people just wire brush the rust off and hammerite paint the W-brace but if it's that bad you could have got a second hand one from zmanalex on here or the better option would have been a £129 aftermarket W brace from eBay. Honestly I'm mad for you ~ don't let that garage shaft you for money mate even if you can afford it. ;)

I'm glad I'm not alone on this, I have had the mot station look-useless. Several mechanics and one a Japanese specialist and they just can't pin point it. It was only slight but after 6 months it's pretty much constant even on what appears as level ground! I'm reluctant to just buy parts to see of it works. Oh and another thing, the car now wobbles over 100mph since the knocking has got worse could that be do with it or do my wheels need balancing?

It's a garage my parents have used for years, but the price of doing the brace combined with the fact they cannot even pin point the problem, and that when I left the car with them, I was waiting just around the corner for my mother to pick me up, a guy jumped in it to take it in, lets just say he made a bit more noise then necessary, even once stationary over the lift. God knows what he did on the test drive!.............. :headhurt:

I am now going to find a specialist, have the car serviced and aligned, soon..

Sound's like a good plan. Doesn't have to be a "specialist" though, just a good independent garage you can actually trust.

Honestly some garages will screw people over left right & centre ~ old, young, men, women, straight or gay it doesn't matter to them.

If they can, they'll rob you blind.

Maybe ask some of the members more local to you to see who they use.

Thanks guys, I think I might take it to abbey Motorsport and just get them to look I've heard they're a nice bunch, fortunately I know a few mechanics so I will not be getting mugged off by a garage!

Glad to hear it. If you get any info from abbey let us know. :-)

The B A N A N A B A R problem is notoriously difficult to diagnose - my advice is to bite the bullet, buy a new arm (£250) and fit and forget ... it usually does the trick
