Who's Painted their Engine Cover

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking of painting my engine coveranyone done there's. Do I need a flexible primer first etc., and will normal paint stand the heat? Did you mask off the Nissan logo or does this come off.

I've got some paint left over from when the spoiler was painted. I was thinking of buying an air brush and doing it myself. Halfords sell a basic ari brush kit for £20. Plus £6 for a gas cartridge.

Thanks

K

right here's how I've done my engine cover, plenum, battery and brake fluid cover, plastic surrounds:

what you need:

sandpaper (medium and fine)

colour cans (or spray gun) I used normal paint, not thermal, and it's fine for the above. Nissan burger comes off.

primer (plastic primer preferred)

lacquer

1- sand down plastics with medium sandpaper

2- first coat of primer

(wait at least 30 mins)

3- sand down with fine sandpaper

4- second coat of primer

(wait at least 30 mins)

5- sand down with fine sandpaper

6- 3rd coat of primer

leave overnight

following day:

1- sand down plastics with fine sandpaper

2- first coat of colour

(wait at least 30 mins)

3- second coat of colour

(wait at least 30 mins)

4- 3rd coat of colour

preferaable many more thin coats of colour

leave overnight

then on day 3

1- sand down plastics with fine sandpaper to get rid of shine of colour

2- first coat of lacquer

(wait at least 30 mins)

3- second coat of lacquer

(wait at least 30 mins)

4- third coat of lacquer

leave overnight

NOTE: don't use too much colour/laquer in one go otherwise paint/laquer will run

using a air brush will take a long time .

since you have some paint already take it to a local body shop and have them paint it for you or buy a small compresor and spay gun and have a go your self

the cheap way is to have a can made up to the colour by a local auto paint shop

if you live in the north east i would do if for you if you droped off the cover and the paint you have

I did mine Nissan (sticking with the family) 526 which is just a standard Halfords rattle can.

Nice bright red.

I'd have gone orange however blue and orange are the colours of a football team I'm not particularly keen on......

Red goes with my blue quite well!

cheers stew,

i've got a silver car, and a red grounding kit, so have to go red to keep im line with the grounding kit (i got it for a good price)

have you got any pics stew?

also did you keep the original lettering in silver, or just spray over?

how many cans? and what colour plastic primer?

No pics yet. Was going to take this afternoon but it was peeing down!

I did a few other bits and bobs at the same time so not sure how many cans for the cover. One probably but two maybe...

I just covered up the lettering. Wanted to keep it but thought it would be a pain. If I decide to make it silver then I'll perhaps make up decals to cover it.

I used a white plastic primer and topped off the paint with petrol proof laquer. Thought it might make all the difference being in the engine bay! I guess I'll find out!

Used plenty of wet and dry paper during the process too.
