Exhaust discolouration normal?

Hi all

 

I went to view a new zed that I'm considering buying of a private buyer.

 

But I noticed that the stainless steel exhaust back box has some discolouration.. Is this something to worry about ?

It'll probably polish off quite handy. If you're concerned just bring along some and give it a bit of elbow grease.

if its a standard back box, then it will fail sooner or later where the pipe enters the box. Good aftermarket options availbe at not too much money. Scorpion is a good starter aftermarket exhaust available from traders here

Thanks for replies. Yea the guy did say something about it being an aftermarket exhaust he put on.

Give it some elbow grease like said above it goes a long way and you'll soon be able to tell if it needs replacing

My guess is that those darker splodges will polish out after 10 mins with some autosol, but the lighter shading almost looks like its burnt. Wonder if its a cheaper exhaust, Chrome plated or something.

 

I could of course be totally wrong. You would look a bit mad turning up to view a car and insisting on polishing the exhaust, but if the seller wants to sell...

If its stainless it will last donkeys years, its likely to be tar/road grit buildup. Im sure it will be fine. Try scrathing it with your fingernail. Should come off easily.

That looks like an aftermarket back box. Looks like it has corroded round the center of the rear section where the silencer material is. My scorpion discoloured slightly like this but nowhere near as bad. They replaced it free under there lifetime warranty.

Well the guy said he could paint it to cover some of the discolouration, if I was that bothered by it...

is this a good 'safe' idea for time being and then I'll get a new one sometime soon?
