x20drb Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Hi guys, I have brought myself an air compressor and spray gun and all the paint to respray my alloys (bear in mind I'm a complete novice at spraying) I sanded and prepped the alloys okay. Sprayed the primer no problem, then the base coat gun metal grey, however the finish is quite rough, even through the surface was very smooth before I sprayed, where am I going wrong?? Any help would be much appreciated! Dan Quote
jumping350 Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Did you sand down the layer of primer? Before base coat Quote
marzman Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Yeah lightly with 1500grit Sand the paint with 1500 grit paper too, and then wash off any dust with soapy water, before applying the clear coat. Quote
x20drb Posted June 2, 2013 Author Posted June 2, 2013 Ok will do, is this normal? Didn't imagine it would be so labour intensive!! Ha Quote
jumping350 Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 I believe so in pretty new to doing it all on my own have spent the last 8 days sanding primering and filling my rear spoiler and wheels, one more wheel to go now! Can see why bodyshops charge so much now and how many favours my friend has done me lol Quote
x20drb Posted June 3, 2013 Author Posted June 3, 2013 In my garage but had doors open, wasn't very dusty/windy tho Quote
x20drb Posted June 4, 2013 Author Posted June 4, 2013 (edited) It has been left for 24 hours now and the finish is awful, hope you can see in the pic, What have I done wrong! Wish I had just paid a man ha Edited June 4, 2013 by x20drb Quote
lmc Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Way to much orange peel. Heat the wheel before you spray them then spray slower. There's a knack to spraying and practice is your friend Quote
x20drb Posted June 4, 2013 Author Posted June 4, 2013 Yeah it's like mad orange peel. It was probs only like 10 degrees when I sprayed, too cold? Half way through sanding back again ha Quote
