sukh13 Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Hi I have a random question, have used search but I dont think it has been covered off. So I want a different key for the Z, but not the rubbish flip from eBay. I want a single solid blade style key and then have the rest of the blipper on the key ring in a separate unit. Kind of like this: Is this possible? Quote
BulletMagnet Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Short answer would be a no...... UNLESS, - you can find a keyfob that accepts the OEM circuit board and matches the buttons. - you know how to make a custom circuit board and transfer everything over and make pretty much any shape you want. There is a transponder chip within the key that will have to be close to the ignition barrel for the immobiliser to disarm. I think there have been several attempts at this without success, but I guess that given the right resources and fabrication skills it could work. Hope this helps Quote
sukh13 Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 How close does it need to be? In terms of circuit boards etc I can get them fabricated quite easily. Quote
zollburgers Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Does that key have a button for the horn??? That's amazing. I could have literally hours of fun with that if it is a horn button that can be used remotely. Quote
Zugara Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Panic alarm button I believe Does that key have a button for the horn??? That's amazing. I could have literally hours of fun with that if it is a horn button that can be used remotely. Quote
AMT Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I've got one of those on my Coupe. Red button that sets the alarm off... why the hell I don't know. I'm being stabbed... hold on I'll press my handy Hyundai panic button... Irritating when your m8 sets it off when your not in the room lol. Quote
sukh13 Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 How about just a new key cut, and then just take out the blade from the old key, leaving a small box as required? Quote
BulletMagnet Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 How about just a new key cut, and then just take out the blade from the old key, leaving a small box as required? Then you might as well leave it in one piece. Don't forget the transponder chip, it has to close to the ignition barrel Quote
Ken Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Does that key have a button for the horn??? That's amazing. I could have literally hours of fun with that if it is a horn button that can be used remotely. Very useful if you forget where you parked the car in a large car park. Quote
sukh13 Posted November 3, 2011 Author Posted November 3, 2011 The Nissan key is so rubbish, looks nothing like a sports car should Quote
BulletMagnet Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 The Nissan key is so rubbish, looks nothing like a sports car should Yeah true, but it's miles better than the key you get for the Ford GT40 supercar Quote
sukh13 Posted November 6, 2011 Author Posted November 6, 2011 What do people think of this? Also how far can the NATS chip be from the keyhole without causing a problem? Thanks! Quote
BulletMagnet Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 What do people think of this? Also how far can the NATS chip be from the keyhole without causing a problem? Thanks! First of...you are NOT driving a GTR. Secondly, it has to be right next to the keyhole. Quote
sukh13 Posted November 6, 2011 Author Posted November 6, 2011 Yeh I know its not a GTR I am just looking for an alternative key, the Micra key looks rubbish Quote
Neilp Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 who cares nobody can see it?? fire a zed keyring on it or something and stop being so vain . People have tried this before and failed miserably as it just won't work. Quote
sukh13 Posted November 6, 2011 Author Posted November 6, 2011 So nobody should try anything new? So the NATS chip has to be up close to the barrel to work, I can get the GTR style key water-jetted, the hard part will be where to put the chip. Would it work in a solid metal casing? Quote
Neilp Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 i think you're on your own with this one i'm afraid Quote
sukh13 Posted November 6, 2011 Author Posted November 6, 2011 Cool, thanks for replying. Anyone else know if the chip can be put in a metal key? Quote
BulletMagnet Posted November 6, 2011 Posted November 6, 2011 Well if you can water jet a recess small enough for it to fit then go for it. If you open your key now, you'll be able to see how far it can be away from the barrel and what size recess you need to cut Quote
sukh13 Posted November 6, 2011 Author Posted November 6, 2011 Yeh I was just wondering if anyone had any knowledge of whether an all metal key would act as a Faraday cage? Quote
BulletMagnet Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 You could cut the recess bigger and set the transponder into resin Quote
sukh13 Posted November 7, 2011 Author Posted November 7, 2011 Yeh that would be good for conductivity, the problem would still be totally enclosed in metal the signal wouldn't work. Basically I am thinking of the GTR style key with a space for a transponder near the front but with the Z logo. Need to talk about how to easily make the cavity without it adding too much expense.
