Which Sealey machine polisher/waxer?

Hi all!!

I am planning to purchase a waxer/polisher/buffer today but it can only be made by Sealey due to work reasons.

I am looking for something that is safe for my paintwork, as I don't have any experience in machine polishing any of my cars. I want something that will not end up taking my paint off but effective enough to remove swirl marks/blemishes.

Any suggestions? A model number/name would be great!

Your help is very much appreciated.

Hassan

Sorry Haz I've not really heard of people using Sealy. Maybe one for the more 'pro-detailers' among us.

Worth a PM to Tim (envyvaleting) to see if he has any experience of them.

Other than that I'd suggest having a look at detailing world

At the end of the day, all DA polishers are just random orbit sanders. The Kestrel I have even has instructions as such in the box! Just look up the specs of something like the Kestral DAS6 and match them with a Sealey. You might find they are more noisy or have more vibrations, but should be ok I think.

First one Googling "Sealey random orbit sander" - tada! - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sealey-DAS150T- ... B000ROD3OO

Thank you for your reply.

Yes Sealey does seem to be focused more on the trade rather than the consumer. I've tried searching all over the internet for reviews on the product with no joy

Either I get a Sealey one really cheap or get something like a Meguiars G220 which looks more or less the same as the ER1700P.

I have dropped Tim a PM, hopefully he wll have some experience with them!

Thanks again for your reply :)

Thanks for your reply Chris :)

So what you're saying is your polisher is probably made by the same company as the Sealey ER1700P but just been re-branded?

The ER1700P does not mention anything about 'hot spots' or doesn't use the word 'orbital', what does that mean?

One massive benefit about the ER1700P is that it's very light weight apparently (2.2kg). what is the 'normal' weight of a typical polisher?

I've never used a machine polisher before and fear of damaging my paint if I used something too 'sophisticated' for me.

Does it matter what make it is or do they all do the same thing?

I really appreciate your help

Kind Regards,

Hassan

Random Orbit (aka Dual Action) means that it doesnt spin in circles like a normal rotary polsher (or sander), instead it makes a more random pattern as it spins. This means that it doenst have a hot spot in the middle like a pure rotary. The ER1700P appears to be a standard (albeit lightweight) rotary sander. What you want in the RO/DA polisher, although not sure of its weight compared to others

I know for a fact that the Kestrel is a DA sander. It is rebranded by Dodo as their "Buff Daddy". From what I've seen, the Megs is no different (read: it is different of course, but of the same ilk)

Hi Hassan,

Not really sure about Sealey machines tbh. They certainly are not a product used much in the trade, so I cant say if thats with good reason (ie could be good/bad whatever!).

I looked at the ER1700P as its mentioned above and it says 50% lighter etc but doesnt tell you the weight!

My rotary polisher (Metabo) is one of the lighter ones on the market but after 10hrs of wrestling with it on a car I know it still feels damn heavy and you end up with arms like a gorilla.

DA machines seem to be a bit lighter but they have a different feel and the vibrations take their toll too.

The ER230P, CP2518, ER1512P or the 150P...forget it or if you do buy one dont tell anyone or let it be seen in public! They will deffo not be up to the job.

Warranty will be important. My Metabo has a 3yr XXL warranty and I so far have had 2 replacement machines with no quibble at all. The 1st machine died at 2.5yrs old and had HEAVY use, the second was last month and it'd lasted 1.5yrs with a lot less use.

Personally I feel you might be better putting your money into another brand such as Kestrel, or the Dodo Juice machines. You'll struggle to find a G220 right now as they are bringing out V2 very soon and there is no more re-stocking in the UK of the old V1 machines. V2 is going to be a lot more money!

Best wishes

Tim

Why can't you get a g220 or a kestrel? Surely if it's your first time your better with something tried and tested no?

I'm guessing because he gets them dead cheap from work ;)

No doubt but for what it's worth he might ruin something or not understand how it works. Maybe as a second machine but for a price of a kestrel how much can he save?

Sealey are a good brand of tool. I used to sell Sealey products before making a complete career change. They sell stuff of the same standard of Draper all the way through very high end specialist tools. Whilst I can't vouch for their polishers, their automotive products were very good and I rarely if ever had faulty or useless products being returned.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been busy with family during the past few days.

Thank you so much for all your advice Chris, Tim, Dblock, Ricey and Peter!!

I have taken all of your advice and decided to go for a Kestrel as its the cheaper option than the G220 and on the description it mentions:

'The DAS 6 offers an ideal introduction to machine polishing, it’s dual action is safer for novices and far less aggressive than a standard rotary polisher. Ideal for removing minor scratches and swirls, the DAS6 provides superior results over hand application. The DAS 6 is fully compatible with Pads and Backing plates for the Meguiars G220 and the Porter Cable 7424.'

That is exactly what I was looking for!

Now is there anyone that could point me in the right direction of finding a cheap one? The best price I have found so far is £84 including delivery.

Also, can you please advise me on the correct pad and compound to use? I'm after something that will remove light swirl marks but not be harsh enough to damage my paintwork. Is there any places I can purchase them from?

Your help is very much appreciated :)

Kind Regards,

Hassan
