Top End Rattle In Very Cold Weather

-8C today in sunny Aberdeen and have noticed same thing as last time we got down to this temperature, namely that when the Z is starting from cold I'm getting a rattle from the top end of the right hand bank of cylinders (right hand if I'm facing the car). Once the car is fully warmed up the noise goes away. Doesn't happen at all in normal weather.

 

Anything to worry about?

 

I'm assuming it's just cold, thick oil taking time to warm up and circulate round the tall engine, but interested in thoughts (and whether anyone has the same issue with their car).

Hi mate,

 

First thing to do is make 100% sure that your oil level is on the mark.

 

Perhaps you are overdue an oil change.

 

What brand of oil and viscosity are you using ?

 

What is the year and mileage of your car?

 

I assume that your oil pressure is good on start up.!!!!

1. Oil up to the mark.

 

2. Serviced in September 2009 (P2). Done under two thousand since.

 

3. The service sheet code says "SCO266 5/30W".

 

4. September 2007; 11,750 miles.

......and I confirm that the oil pressure is also fine on start up.

is it not normal for this to happen, i had it before my service and even after, mine only happens for less than a second though, but i just put it down to the cold weather as it doesnt happen any other time

Hate to say it, but mine is as quiet as can be even on freezing mornings at start-up, so not sure it's normal....

I'm pretty sure mine is does the same in very cold weather ... but only if I'm high rev'ing ...

 

I haven't heard it in a while now .. but then I've not been pushing the car too much as the roads haven't been the best ...

Should have added that the rattle is only on tickover and stops when the engine is properly warmed up.

 

It also only happens when the outside temperature is well down - i.e. less than -5.
