M13KYF Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 IN the latest edition of Auto Express, another product test has been carried out on Hi Octane petrols available from BP, Shell and Tesco. Interesting results will raise a few eyebrows Tested on a Vauxhall Astra VXR on a rolling road with an accuracy of +/-1bhp Regular (95RON) 213.5bhp BP Ultimate (97RON) 209.7bhp Shell Optimax (98RON) 222.2bhp Tesco 99 (99RON) 221.3bhp How poor is BP ultimate. Surrey's rolling road's Charlie Wright thought the BP must be a bad batch. Surely it must be hard to make a bad batch. It's not like it's hand made. Quote
hagar Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 were the test on the same day done under the same atmospheric conditions? Quote
M13KYF Posted June 19, 2006 Author Posted June 19, 2006 it doesn't say but it does say that the tank and lines were drained and the car was driven for 60 miles to let the ECU maximise its settings Quote
lomoto Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 if you can take this at face value , it truely astonishing the difference between BP and Shell or even Tesco Quote
Jacko Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 if you can take this at face value , it truely astonishing the difference between BP and Shell or even Tesco Even so when BP is typically about 2-3p dearer per litre (well it is round here) Quote
Chesterfield Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Makes me feel good about having nowt but Tesco 99 in mine. Quote
Derek_ZR Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 BP is dearer everywhere you go. At least Optimax shows a benefit seeing as we need to use it. Can't wait until Tesco sell 99 up here although the local Tesco does nothing but maintain high prices for all garages locally. Luckily I work in Edinburgh where it's 4ppl cheaper. Quote
AndyC Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Shame they haven't shown Sainsbury's too, I always get mine there (think its a 97). Nice & cheap Quote
Jacko Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Shame they haven't shown Sainsbury's too, I always get mine there (think its a 97). Nice & cheap Yeah Sainsbury's is 97RON. They prob just buy off one of the big boys..... Quote
judas Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 were the test on the same day done under the same atmospheric conditions? I'll ask Charlie and let you know. Quote
M13KYF Posted June 19, 2006 Author Posted June 19, 2006 explain Judas. Do you know the guy then. Quote
judas Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Yeah, I've met him a few times - he's one of the regulars on Pistonheads. Quote
neo Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 better start filling up with optimax or tesco's then after about 18 months on almost ultimate every fill up Quote
Mathys Posted June 19, 2006 Posted June 19, 2006 Was BP the only one which didn't want to sponsor the event? I'm sorry, but such huge differences between all of them (expect the 95) is kinda weird. Quote
judas Posted June 20, 2006 Posted June 20, 2006 were the test on the same day done under the same atmospheric conditions? I'll ask Charlie and let you know. Response from Charlie: "They were indeed!" HTH Quote
