Welcome bud  Mmm thats a new one, i've not heard of that happening before. You should be hitting the limit at 6600rpm pre06, i'm sure someone will be along shortly to answer you question.

Another question - probably a verylog shot but this car hasn't been fitted with anything like the UTEC engine management system by the previous owner has it? You can alter the rev limit with those.

Hi there,

Jsut done some more investigation, it revs cleanly up to the proper rev limit in neutral, or under gradual acceleration, but cuts in at about 5500rpm under full hard acceleration.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Have you set the limit on the gauge to 6600rpm, it can be misleading cause when i get up that end of the rev range i'm concentrating on the road and use the rev limit light( through the corner of my eye) as an indication.

As above, could it be drive shaft?

When you first start the car, does the multidisplay show 5500rpm or 6600rpm?

Mine was set at 6000rpm when I first bought mine and it was only after I fitted my grounding kit, which involved disconnecting the battery, that the rev limiter reset itself to 6600rpm (battery was disconnected for about 20mins)

Hope this helps.

You can set the rev limit yourself (for UK cars) but I'm not sure about JDM's

If you use the buttons on the left of the dash cowling you can scroll through the MPG, Temp etc until you see the rev limit. You can set the engine rev limit from there

Can I ask what tells you the rev limiter is at 5.5k? Is it the shift light or are you bouncing off it? Have you tried acutally hitting the red line? Most people get confused betwen the redline and shift light

It is bouncing off the rev limiter at 5500rpm, the shift light is set to 6600rpm, as I said in neutral or slowly accelerating it will rev up to 6600rpm, it is just under hard acceleration it bounces off the limiter at 5500rpm.

And no other dash lights on? I would try and get a OBDII reader on it if you can or get it to a trusted garage to get them to look at it. That seems very odd. Hopefully Adam or Alex will be along shorty with some ideas.

How many miles has your car done budddy? It's a long shot but if you've done >50k on the original spark plugs they could need replacing... Otherwise you may need to bite the bullet and get a specialist / dealer to look at the car.

Good luck.

Cheers for your help guys, the car has done just under 52000, not sure about doing it in sixth, don't know anywhere I could get away with going that quickly!!

For everyday driving it's fine, it's not that often I will be really accelerating at full pelt to the redline again and again. Might see if I can find a cheap local specialist to have a look. Or just wait until the next service and get them to see.

I no longer have th original dials, but I do remeber that you could play with what I thought was a rev limiter adjuster by using the switches on the left of the instrument binnacle.

What did that achieve then? (I have no limiter anymore.)

See above, thats not the limiter, thats the shift light

And you must still have a limiter otherwise you'd blow your engine up

So when you moved the RPM indiacted between (what was it 5500 and 7ksomething)

that just determined when the 'change gear now' light came on?

anyway, I've never been "limited"

Must just have a flair for changing up ! :p

Yes, all it changes is the little light on the dash. You didnt think Nissan would give you access to the rev limiter did you? :surrender:

And you always have and always will be limited :p

I agree, that's well worth a look. Engines can rev fine under no load but the spark can break down under heavy load. Whip out a plug and take a look at it, they really shoudl all be changed at 50K but they will be getting crappy at about 40K.
