My wife is looking to upgrade her O2 mobile phone to take advantage of the fact that her new car (Nissan Qashqai) has built-in Bluetooth (which works really well with my phone). Her current phone is not compatible, but she can't upgrade on her current contract until she has had it for 12 months (in July). I wondered if it would be possible to get hold of a bluetooth handset and just swap the sim card over. Would that work? Or is there a complication about the handset needing to be unlocked or some such nonsense. If it would work, where's the best place to get a decent handset without paying too much for it? Quote

Hint from an insider, tell her to try calling Vodaphone, Orange, etc from her mobile enquiring about new contracts and see if she gets a call from O2. If shes a valued customer, she might well get a call from retention, then she can demand a better phone. Or call customer service and tell them you are not happy with the phone and see what they can do. O2 customer support are generally quite open to keeping people by offering them phone upgrades. Alternatively I think I have a W800i somewhere with I beleive all the bits, you can have for free if you come to the Wales run? Quote

Digsy Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 Bluetooth phones are getting cheaper. What I have done in the past is buy a pay as you go on O2, chuck the sim and pop the old sim in. Cheaper than buying a sim-free phone and no unlocking issues. Quote
AndySpak Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 Look for a cheap secondhand handset on ebay. This should tie you over until you are able to upgrade her contract. As long as you buy a O2 handset you should be able to stick the sim in and use it without the hassle of unlocking. Try this link for starters...
