Gearbox Crunching, the saga continues....

in short my z has this common problem of the gears crunching between 4th and 6th. took it in to a stealer, they couldn't find the fault. complained to NMGB who logged in on their system as it was about a week before the end of my warranty. took it in to another stealer that found the fault 2 days after the warranty ended.

They spoke to the warranty dept who said they would only pay 50% because the fault wasn't confirmed within the warranty period. hence lots of arguing and letters from me and no change in the outcome from them.

just got a quote from my local stealer to do the work of about £1500. they do however claim they've never fixed a z gearbox and reckon they're prob gonna have to change all the shift rings at the same time because that's what the manual says. total cost for that is about £3300.

sorry for waffling but am i being legged over here and should i get a quote from a different dealer? or is this all correct?

any help gratefully received!

PM teddyonholiday but the approx parts needed are attached (although I never needed to get it done). Labour costs are based on a gearbox specialist

The 4th to 6th crunching is a known warranty issue, and it sounds like there is a lack of ownership in someone looking after your problem. Write to NMGB explaining what has happened, and you will probably find it gets fixed under warranty. The fact you have reported it and the original place failed to find it is not your fault.

If the place you are at have never fixed a gearbox, my advice would be to go to a dealer who has. As much as their service sucks, the mechanics at the Slough dealership have done a few and did mine very well IMO. It is now the best change in the box!

But above all else, do not pay for it or admit any 'liability' until you get a final, written response from NMGB. The reply saying you have spoken to a lawyer.....! ;)

and those are the costs for replacing all the shift rings!!! def looks like i'm getting legged over then!

Yep you only need 6th gear assembly parts and not all main shaft replacement, but H5 is right, you should be able to get this sorted under warranty given the circs.

PM me your e-mail and I'll send you some other stuff ;)

reply to H5;

are NMGB the same as the warranty people? it's just the people that are only offering me the 50% payment send me letters with the letter head Nissan Motors GB

Yep, that's right.

I bascially had the very same problem with some corroding wheels - it happened in the warranty period but the dealer messed it up.

See this link http://www.350z-uk.com/forum/viewtopic ... losing+rag

It will explain all and show you how I wrote to them and got it sorted. I would say write back raising your points in a similar way I did in my letter and explain why it is unacceptable that they should only pay 50%. Use every reference, this place, dealer service, the lot. Don't let them fob you off. Think of it as a 4 week job that you will earn whatever the pre tax amount of £3,300 is!! :)

well it seems like H5's advice has worked. after writing a bit of a snotty letter back to nissan customer service they have agreed to strip and fix my gearbox down next week and there will be no charge!!!! cheers for everybody's help with this and it just shows that perseverance pays off!!

one thing they did say though was that if i pay 5% of the costs then the parts they replace will be covered under a warranty typre protection. has anybody ever heard of this before?

:yahoo::thumbs: Pleased it worked for you. :)

As for the 5% thing, not heard of it but it depends how formal it is. I would want it in writing from NMGB (not the dealer) confirming what is covered. Then it is up to you if you think it is value for money based on whatever they come back with. ;)
