How high is the gear knob thread?

I've read up a bit on the removal of the existing knob, but I was wondering if anyone could confirm if the existing thread would mean an aftermarket knob was sit really high as a result? I don't want to be doing silly things like cutting it shorter, but on the same front, I don't want to have it looking silly. Looking at something similar to this:

Depends on the knob, but most sit lower.

I think I took a few mm off the shaft when fitting my MOMO knob (which is fixed using 3 grub screws it doesn't screw on) and ended up with this.
