MOT brake testing.

Hi all.

Nearly had her for a year... time flies.

I have in the back of my mind that you can't test limited slip diff equipped cars on the standard roller brake test rigs found in most testing centers.

Is this right and if so, how do you test the brakes?

Don't worry about it. It'll either flag up on their system and they won't do it, or they will and you'll never notice the difference.

Despite the technical fears over an LSD car exploding after an MOT test, I've yet to see or hear first hand about one. That either means they're never tested on the rollers and MOT guys are doing their job, or it's of no consequence if they do.

The actual MOT guidelines say cars with LSD`s should not be tested on the rollers. What they do is one guy drives your car down the road, whilst another sits in the passenger seat holding a manual device which measures the cars braking when the driver brakes. The device apparently is so sensitive that even if you have terrible brakes (like the zeds handbrake) then it will record a pass. It was quite nerve racking seeing your pride & joy being driven off down the road, but literally it was only for 300 yards or so.

When I took my zed for an MOT I actually found a local garage which specialised in such cars as I felt they would know what they were doing more than some back street garage. But that was purely for my own piece of mind and as long as the tester is following the same guidelines it really shouldnt matter where you take it.

You dont need a tapley meter to do a zed the lsd is fine on a brake tester as its very low speed , its 4wd cars thats more of an issue

This. Last time I had an MOT, I kicked up a fuss as they refused to honour my request not to stick it on the rollers. I later found that the section of the MOT manual that mentioned LSD cars should not be driven on brake rollers isn't in the new version of the testers manual.

However, now its so low, it wont fit on the rollers, it would definitely get beached on the front end ;)
