Ricki Posted December 27, 2007 Share Posted December 27, 2007 Hi guys, does anyone know what the law is with regards to Japanese size number plates on UK cars? Obviously the long UK plates don't fit, but I wondered if there were any laws regarding "letters per line"? The reason I ask is that I want to put 5 letters on the top line, and one letter on the bottom line, centralized. Yes... this is probably a bit cheeky and I will probably be stopped, BUT... are there any laws forbidding this... as I can't find any (only laws on spacing etc)...? Thanks! nixy Posted December 27, 2007 Share Posted December 27, 2007 That's exactly what I did, I had N11XY on the top and D on the bottom - I got pulled! I now have N11 XYD all fitted on one line in the middle - the lettering can be slightly smaller on an import plate and as it has two 1's in it, it fits ok. AndySpak Posted December 27, 2007 Share Posted December 27, 2007 I had a heavily modified plate (in order to create an obscenity) on my car a few years back and got pulled 7 times in 6 months for it. I actually designed the plate myself on coreldraw and took the file on floppy disc (it was way before USB sticks were around) to a local number plate printing firm. The police weren't that happy about the illegality of the plate but I think they were soft on me because it made them smile at the same time. I find that if you are nice with them you can usually talk your way out of any serious trouble. Although being nice to them is tough, especially when I think they would be better deployed trying to catch the guy who smashed my passenger window and nicked my tomtom rather than fining people for doing 80mph on the M6 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

nixy Posted December 28, 2007 Share Posted December 28, 2007 a £30 fine would have been easier - I got a vehicle defect notice, had to change the plates and produce my car at an MOT station within 2 weeks - have the notice signed by the MOT tester and send it off to the rozzers.
