  1. i've found annual mileage makes a large difference, so maybe

    Adrian Flux wouldn't quote me.

Wonder why I'm paying so much more than others.

maybe you do more miles? i'm a high mileage driver and my insurance tends to be higher than others with similar NCB and age

so for interest, i'm 35 with 9 years NCB doing 10K per year (50/50 personal/business) and a stock HR came in at £500/year (quite a few quotes near that price on compare sites). that's moving from 130bhp to 308bhp

  2. scary stuff, especially with a new car as it takes time to learn how much she drinks.

i also hate taking readings as practicality never matches up with the manuals. i think most people take a reading when cold, but all the car manuals i've read say to take a reading when warm after 5-10 mins for the oil to return.

so how many take a reading when cold, and how many take one at temp?

  3. So the gauge on the dash is actually no true indication of oil level?

I think it can give you an approximate indication, or at least i'd like to think so.

The manual states that the oil pressure gage "is not designed to indicate low engine oil level". Same thing with the warning light, it's a omg stop the car NOW light not a you need to think about topping up soon light, even if the light only flickered they still tell you to pull over and cut power. The light is oil pressure too not oil level. Check pages 2-9 and 2-17 to see their words (HR manual, so page numbers could be a little off on DE cars)

  4. Nope, my facepalm as I read your post wrong: I thought you meant a tyre review thread, not a tyre purchase place thread. My apologies!

Tbh a places to buy tyres from thread is pretty much redundant as soon as it starts, as prices change every month so in a few weeks one retailer could go from awesome to expensive.

hehe, d'oh! apologies are of course accepted, i expect by now your replies to such threads are more reflex than thought :)

i don't think such a thread would be used to track the cheapest place each month, that would be far too much work. it could however be a great resource for places that tend to be cheap and also a place to talk about the service they provide. sometimes reading about someone having an issue with a company tells you a lot more about if they are any good based on how they handle the issue.

surely there are three that are always a good starting point, them being:

    Tyreleader

    Oponeo

    Camskill

    ?

Or Black Circles, or Pneus Online, or Asda (got my MPSS from them in Feb, they were dirt cheap!)...

this is exactly what i'm talking about. from reading this forum i've already discovered several placed to buy tyres, and these 2 posts alone have raised a 3 more to my attention. there isn't much else needed than people posting a list of places they do or would buy from. then a bit of chat if someone has an issue and how it was resolved. i don't think it would be a very big thread, but it would add value to the site.

it would then become a place people could go to when they were in the market for new tyres to both get a ton of quotes and also find a supplier they like dealing with (or know to avoid).

  5. 120 mile round trip for me and my new zed has had some pampering today from the team. I also asked them to have a look over her to see if there were any issues that will need sorting out. I've not got a nice plan to bring my car up to peak condition over the next few months.

Was good to meet some other forumites too and chat a bit with them.

Good to meet you to ( insert forgotten name here )

Good luck with getting the Zed how or want it, mechanicals first then cosmetics, you seem to have it all worked out

Thanks to Sly & Aston for the work on the Jaaaaag again Friday, sorry it required a bit more man handling than expected

Thanks for putting up with my waffling :) And I see you're as bad with names as I am :)

  6. We have one of those too ;)

we do? where's it hiding then? i don't know every inch of this forum but i have trawled through a ton of it. seen plenty of advice on where to buy from scattered through various threads but not noticed a threat just about where to buy from, and if there is one, i'd love to see it stickied!

    at the moment we have

    • Tyre guide: post your tyre review here
    • Some really informative tyre and wheel info.
    • Wheel alignment settings
    • Tyre pressure on non standard size tyres
    • Mixing Tyres (and why you really shouldn't!)
    • Tyres & Why They're Important

in this section, and none of those scream where to buy. (did a quick check of 370z section and they only have the 1 sticky, poor 370z owners)

can you link it for me? then i'll adjust my facepalm based on how obvious it was :)

  7. gratz :)

interested to see what others say about the gear stick movement. i've always noticed a bit of movement when i hold the stick and play with the throttle in other cars, so i've not thought to question that in the zed. now you've got me wondering if mine moves in all gears or just a few gears.

took me a while to learn the rev match on down shift, was used to a 1.8 v6 which needs a bit more boot to bounce the needle so i was over doing it on the zed. once i got the feel for her everything started to click and feel smooth and very rewarding :)

  9. I think my ears are still ringing from meeting OCTZILLA ;)

Looks like I picked a great day to get my new zed serviced and checked over, stumbled into that mini-meet :)

Great to meet you guys and see some of what makes this forum so great in person.

  10. People cant even seem to search the tyre section for which is the best tyre! I managed to get a sticky on wheel and offsets, what does everyone ask, what width and offset!!

hehe, this is true, but there are some of us that do stop to read the stickies. i've also used the forum search quite a bit, or just google as it often brings results from this forum up near the top. at the moment i'm looking at having to trawl through several threads to compile my own list of sites to buy from. that will work for me but i can't help feeling a sticky where people can add to it and share experiences both good and bad would be better

  11. would be nice to get a sticky for places to buy from. i've seen quite a few online shops mentioned in the main tire thread, so i know where to go to hunt for them. just be a lot easier if there was one place for people to talk about where to buy from as opposed to what to buy

There are such a range of places where you can get tyres that are constantly changing their prices and indeed traders on here can often be competitive, such that the next week a sticky would be out of date. Just need to shop around for best prices.

oh of course the cheapest will change on a regular basis, but it seems every time i read a new tire thread a new supplier is recommended. so i was more thinking of a sticky that listed all the suppliers members have had a good experience with so when it comes to new boots time we can run through the list to see who comes up trumps that day. one benefit of being part of a community is people share their experiences which helps build confidence in buying from a good place. look at that paint site that is now stickied because it seems it's just a scam site. i can google a list of tire sites, but i'd have no idea which ones were safe to buy from.

  12. A lot will depend on the garage, I know Sly at Kaizer has quoted me a lot less than a grand and looking at the certificates on his wall today I see he's been in the top 30 Nissan mechanics a few times!

So if anyone is looking at this by all means get a quote from a local garage, but then get one from Sly too. By the sounds of it you could save money by driving half way across England and also get your car tended to by an expert, win win :)

  13. What issue is that?

My right wing mirror also fails to fold back out occasionally!

so from 1K rpm if i very gently try to accelerate she will start to go, then stop and splutter, then kick in. really annoying when you're stuck in creeping traffic! not a problem if the road ahead if clear as she's quite happy to launch :)

it can be all sorts of things, but for my car the suspects is the air intake system. so that's getting a look over and clean up where needed. then over the next few month i'll be getting all the fluids replaced and just general service stuff to get her running as smooth as possible.

  14. would be nice if the manual told us what pressures were safe...

i've been working with 30 on tick over once warmed, and 60psi at 60mph in 6th gear (or 2K rpm). my HR seems to stick to that very well, but i have no idea how far up or down it could go before it's indicating a problem. i think DE and HR pressures are the same, at least when i was asking for numbers before the test drives i got a few DE owners chip in and all agree.

did the garage check the oil gallery gasket?

  15. Mixed part-worns for £20 a corner are where the real savings are made. Its a known fact that brand new tyres are less grippy to begin with until they are worn in, so let someone else do the hard work for you and pickup a bargain! You know you've got a good deal when there is a language barrier at the place you are buying from, especially if there's a queue of minicabs.

mixed tires on each corner also give the car an epic base. the low rumble is so strong you can see it vibrating your fingers! just grip the steering wheel normally, then extend one finger. if you've got a good mix of tires on your finger should be shaking so much it becomes a blur.

  16. Nowhere near as horrendous as I expected. I could get used to this!

I'll be jumping in the car in a few hours so will try to remember to check the oil pressure. I think it's fairly decent though.

As for the fuel history - there's no way of really knowing, is there? It's all about benefit of the doubt there!

So I have to drive it stock for a year and just keep crapping myself every time I get some speed up?

Best get down to primark to stock up on underwear.

no idea on the fuel, not without taking the engine to bits which would be expensive. got my fingers crossed the previous owners put the right stuff in mine too

not sure what feels wrong for you. mine has no-name tires on and feels very stable at speed. or do you mean cornering? i doubt you'd need wings on her at this stage, not after upgrading from a 307 :)

maybe it's bad rubber, or maybe the wheels need aligning? this is out of my depth really so you could try asking specific questions in the general or technical section of the forums. try to describe what feels wrong and i'm sure there will be a ton of advice on what to check and what to tweak. mention you're probably locked out of modding for the year too so they know what to focus on

    Hi everyone,

I am in the process of arranging funds so I can buy my first 350z.The model I am thinking of getting is a convertible with automatic flappy paddles.I would appreciate what you guys think.

hi there faz, this is the introduction area of the forum so you'd be more than welcome to make your own thread and ask a few questions :)

i've not looked into the automatic options, and personally soft tops are not for me. the general rule of thumb is the 350z is a great car, so just get the flavour that suits your own tastes. the only time you really need other opinions is if you want to get a car that will be easy to sell on later. if you want the wind in your hair and flappy paddles to play with then go for it!

  17. most impressive :)

the bog box i tried was half an inch too big for every place i tried to cram it, and i didn't want to put stress on the trim to make it work. still, the bits inside would have slotted here and there, and i could have flat packed the box to put it all back in the other side

  18. I expect changing wheel or tyre size would count as a mod, so chances are you'll have to wait before you can do that. when you're ready though you'll find info on what sizes you can play with and what you need to do to make it all fit (eg new alloys and/or spacers and even tweaks to the body). this forum is just that awesome :)

i think the 2 most important things to look out for are a long history of being driven on regular unleaded and also low oil pressure. once fully warmed up it should be at 30psi on tick over, and 60 psi at 60mph in 6th gear (or 2K rpm). if it's a lot lower than that then find a local expert to get it checked out.

prices vary and it's worth doing a check on all the tire sites when the time comes. but a quick check on 2 show the rears costing (fully fitted for 1 tire) £163 on one site and £179 discounted to £147 on another. i think you can get it even cheaper on some of the other sites but i havent gathered a short list of them all yet. fronts should be cheaper and that's all assuming your car is running on stock wheels. hmm, another site are quoting £129 for a rear, but i don't think that's fitted
