  1. Front or rear? 20K on the rears is quite frankly staggering, but assuming everything else stays the same then yes, you could see that kind of mileage out of a set of MPSS. As well as better grip, feel, noise etc.

They were rears. I'm assuming by "quite frankly staggering" means you think it was good. Tyremen told me 10-15k would have been good.

I still think it's pretty bad myself.

Bad? Sweet jesus man, if I get 5K Ive done well.

With no disrespect, it doesnt sound like youre pushing the car to the limit, Ive no doubt the Vreds would be fine - I personally found them quite incommunicative and thought wet grip was average at best. MPSS are the best, I personally really like RE050A's as well.

Quite right - I don't on the roads of Norfolk and I would be most unhappy if I had to change tyres as often as I change oil.

I ran Vredesteins on my A4 estate, far better than the PS2s it came fitted with, excellent high speed stability, braking, wet get way superior.

What works on and FWD estate is not always going to be the best choice for an RWD coupe. ;)

  2. Some recent mileage calculations worked out by calculator not car computer -

    Alpine Tour mileages

    30.63

    33.53

    27.13

    21.13 (Stelvio)

    25.77

    26.00

    29.54

    25.18 (Nimes)

    28.91

    27.20

    30.63 (Evreux)

    29.61 (Thurrock)

Average mileage over the 12 fillups above – 27.938m

AM i reading this right you were getting 27 miles to a tank?

  4. How much longer do MPSS last over the other options, is the question being posed.

A lot, is the answer. I'd estimate somewhere near 1.5 to 2 times as longer lasting.

So, I got just under 20k miles on my Vreds which I thought was bad and you're

suggesting that I could get as much as 40k miles on MPSS?

  5. They are ok in the wet. Ok. That's IMO. Also they dont deal well with standing water.

Mpss is super sports. Both super sports and eagle f1s are a much much better tyres as they deal with standing water better, better dry grip and they last much longer. So even though your spending more upfront you dont need to change them as often.

    How often?

  6. Two years ago I put on a set of Vredstein Ultrac Sessantas which I have been happy with. Normally I'm quite a "grandpa" kind of driver but I just got back from the Alps, Route de Napoleon and Gorge du Verdon (the last two under the very moderating influence of the oh). I was surprised to find the rears are nearly bald and I certainly wasn't aware of smoking the tyres in the Alps and the traction control was always on. Fronts are still near perfect. Total mileage just under 20k on the set. Is this normal?

  7. If I actually knew you guys better, I'd love to do a massive road trip like this. Maybe I need to get my arse down to some of these meets.

That's interesting my mates are talking about bailing on me. Something to do with girlfriend wants to blah blah blah...

Typical isn't it. Problem I have is very few of my mates care about cars in the slightest, and very few can drive and like driving. So road trips just don't happen for me.

Yeah, I get that. I tried to include Milan, Florence, Monaco, Geneva to cater for the less enthusiastic drivers and add some culture but it doesn't appear to enough. Looks like I'll be able to sing along to my tunes though.

Keep in touch. I know it's depressingly a long way off but one or two of us may want to do the Pyrenees next year. I think 4 to 6 is an ideal size for a group.

  8. I'm just in the last week of a four week trip. Six of us went to the Le Mans test day then on through Burgundy to Annecy on a Jackal recommended route, did the Furka pass on the first day of opening. Susten and Grimsel were closed. Other passes were the St. Gotthard, the Oberlap, the Stelvio, the Petite and Grand St. Bernard, the Route de Napoleon, the Gorge du Verdon. At the moment I'm near St. Tropez and will be working my way homeward next week.

The Stelvio was the most disappointing for us going up. Packed with every conceivable vehicle. But it was Saturday. Going down was curiously empty. Maybe they were having a siesta.

As there were 6 of us initially our hotels were chosen and booked in February. The others went home after 9 days but my wife flew out to join me and we just book our hotels from day to day using Booking.com or the Auberge and Logis guide. No problems so far.

It's been a great trip and the Zed with 95k miles on it has performed flawlessly (touch wood).

  9. Maybe, though we might bump into around the san bernardino pass! Look out for a black 350 with a very tired driver (Nurburgring > Andermatt in one day, sigh).

Will do. We'll be the the Alps region between the 12th and 17th of June after taking in the test day at Le Mans. I also have a black Zed but will be with a group of 5 others including a GTR, a 911 Turbo, a RS4, a supercharged Elise and a Monaro.

With respect to comments made by others about the legality of use in Europe as long as it broadcasts on a pmr446 frequency like the Cobra MT975s, they are legal in Europe.

  10. The chain tensioners that I refer are inside the engine beside the chains.

    Alex. :)

So, just to make sure I understand this, you can only check the chain tensioners by partly dismantling the engine to see whether or not they are within the limits you mentioned.

  11. Some 350s are known to rattle for a few seconds from cold start and there are numerous factors which might cause this.

However if you have explored all the possibilities and the rattle is from the one of the cam chains, then I doubt if it will be the hydraulic tensioner and is more than likely to be one of the cam chains.

This year alone I have replaced cam chains on two 350s due to similar issues.

From cold, If you check how far the tensioner is protruding from the tensioner housing then that will give you an idea what is going on.

Circa 10mm protrusion is acceptable and circa 20mm is not.

If the protrusion is circa 20mm then the reason usually for this is that the small cam chain will be stretched and the tensioner has to come out further to take up the slack and the rattle you get is due to the chain interfering with the casing.

If the above is your issue then a new cam chain and tensioner will fix your issue.

Also best to replace the chain guides and slippers when you are at it as Nissan have upgraded these with more efficient and durable parts.

    Alex. :)

    Hi Alex,

Is the cylindrical device with the pin at the back next to the dipstick then chain tensioner? If it is and judging by the measurements you have given, it looks to me that this might be on it's limit. Difficult to say for sure I appreciate but a guesstimate would be useful.

  12. In preparation for an EVO triangle tour and a 3500 mile European tour this summer, I checked the pads on the rear brakes. They appear to have at least 4mm material on them. As I can't remember how thick new ones are from when I changed the fronts last year, I'm uncertain whether or not they really need changing.

    Any thoughts?

  15. If you had purchased £1,000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you would have £49.00 today.

If you had purchased £1,000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you would have £33.00 today.

If you had purchased £1,000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you would have £0.00 today.

If you had purchased £1,000 of shares in Northern Rock three years ago, you would have £0.00 today.

But, if you had purchased £1,000 worth of beer one year ago at ASDA, drank it all, then taken the aluminium cans to the scrap metal dealer, you would have received £214.00.

Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle.

    And then..........................

A recent study found that the average Briton walks about 900 miles a year.

Another study found that Britons drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.

That means that, on average, Britons get about 41 miles to the gallon!

Makes you proud to be British.
