  1. 996 Turbo is a bit fragile these days, it would be off the road getting fixed half the time

A 2014 model Cayman S would be my choice, its nearly as quick as a GTR in a straight line but is so much better to drive due to considerably lower weight. Ill be test driving an M2 in the near future too but dont imagine it will handle as well as the Porsche :)

    Nearly.....but not quite.

    Cayman S GT4 4.4 secs. 0-62 Top speed 174mph

    GTR 2.8 secs. 0-62 Top speed 196mph

    Source. Evo Magazine.

PS. I do quite like the design of the Caymans. Makes a nice departure from the toad like appearance of the rest of the range.

  2. Most cameras that I found offer the same or similar performance. So I would look for one that videoed at a higher speed. There are some that will do 60fps and are worth having for picture quality if that is important to you.

  3. I have decided I won't go the GTR route for the simple reason that it is too soon and will spoil my enjoyment of anything else that follows.

Sorry, but thats a ridiculous statement - even from the cars mentioned in this thread an M6, Maserati, 911 and a Mustang are all totally different experiences, even my current 4 seater is capable of performance very similar to a GTR but delivers it in a totally different way. You dont have to drive everywhere at 10/10ths either ......... which is where the GTR falls down for me, its doesnt feel special when doing 45 mph like a Maserati does.

    ^^^This, in bucketloads.

Anyone who thinks that having driven a fast car makes other cars seem rubbish is talking bobbins. The F12 is about as fast a road car as you're likely to reasonably have a chance of driving, and I can promise you that in no way do I feel hard done by when I drive our 182 now. In fact, there's many times I'd rather take the 182 than either my 645 or my old 911, despite being nowhere near as fast. I know, that's not exactly what you were saying and I've exaggerated the point for effect so I apologise for that, but the point stands.

The AMV8 just looks dated to me now. The Maser is still a head turner, and has a Ferrari V8. Given they're both fragile things, and neither are cutting edge in terms of dynamics, I couldn't look further than the Maser.

Yeah, I know what you mean. There are times when I'd rather drive my Peugeot 207 than a GTR. For those who think it's ugly, it turned more heads this summer in Europe than Astons and a Porsche it accompanied. Not an empirical fact just an observation.

  4. And just to qualify my "NOTequall " comment, I have seen people track and race driving at 70 who could thrash a lot of younger track drivers.

True enough Ricky. I was at Silverstone Historic racing last weekend and a lot of the drivers looked "historic" if not "vintage" and damn good drivers they were.

  5. HHHhhhhmmm, seems a bit high. I paid £9k for mine back in 2010 with nearly 70k miles on it. I never had any problems with it just did servicing and replaced consumables, plugs, pads, tyres, wipers, aux. belts. Bodywork was good having had the front bumper resprayed and dents in the doors pulled. Eventually had to accept a low trade-in price for it of £5k with 97k miles on it when the market for Zeds was depressed in 2013. Then, similar cars were fetching £6-7k.

GLWS though. Maybe the market is right for you.

  6. The thought did occur to me that perhaps all the "migrants" fleeing northwards to a better life might not appreciate a couple of boys on a jolly in a sports car flying by going the other way. But then they'll probably be huddled around campfires under the bridges you're driving over and won't hotice.

  7. Much as I hate to agree with my old buddy Dan, I think that for the most part, he has hit the nail on the head. Although I think for £100 per night in a hotel is a bit OTT. Most of our trips resulted in hotel costs of around £40 - £60 per night. We're in Spain just now and last night we stayed in a reasonable hotel for 58 euros, 12 of which was a 3 course dinner with a full bottle of wine. The most we spent was 113 euros for dinner, hotel and breakfast in a modern hotel in Jaca on the first night.

My June trip to Spain for 14 days cost me £2,243.76 for absolutely everything including fuel for a GTR.

  8. I don't quite understand the per person price being the same. Hotels charge by the room not the person. Ferries and the Eurotunnel charge by the car not the number of passengers. To me the per person pricing looks like a license to print money and a rip off. Sure a small margin perhaps for the extra person to include things like breakfasts or dinners if included would be ok. Doing it that way would make organised tours much more attractive to the average punter like me.

Until things change which they probably won't, I and my friends will continue to do our own thing. I am currently on my fourth road trip this summer and for the price of one Petrolhead Nirvana tour I have probably done two. So it's worth considering unless you have loooaads a money to throw around.

  9. Happy to answer any other questions people have. :)

I have a few if you don't mind lol

Looks like an awsome trip I did one similar myself this year thanks for sharing

If you don't mind me asking ?

Was there anything you think they could of done beter ?

How many hours a day did you drive did you feel it was to many or just right ie plenty of relaxation time.?

I see meals were included how did that suit?

Or did you feel some nights you would of liked to do your own thing ?

What sort of quality of hotels and parking

    Was provided

This may seem a lot of questions but there is a reason lol

Myself and a freind are taking a group out next year strictly at cost and mostly freinds or freinds of freinds.

But it's somthing we would like to turn into a regular trip but also run tours as a business possibly in the future

So I'm just interested to here your thoughts on the above

    Thanks in advance :)

Doing it on your own - a fraction of the cost. Running a business doing it. Loooaaaadds a money. One idea might be to tailor it for those on a more limited budget and take less margin on each trip but in the long term attract more customers.

  10. I so want in on this. Just need a spare £4000 hahaha. Looks fabulous!

Fuel wise that isn't so bad, I only manage 26 MPG in my 350z commuting so I can handle 22MPG for fun ;)

Don't need anything like £4k if you plan and do it yourself or with a small group. You could cut the costs by at least half.

  11. I did a trip to the Brecon Beacons not too long ago, was quite fun, scenery was fairly nice but the roads. Jesus christ. my poor under carriage :'(

All you lucky guys doing Europe make me jealous and itching to do it myself. Just need the funds and the other half needs the time off, which isn't going to happen unfortunately :(

Look like some lovely roads to take at... ummm.... "enthusiastic" pace ;)

Can't help you on the oh's time off but in my experience the cost of say doing the Black Forest is not more expensive and in some cases cheaper than doing the Highlands. Depends on where you live in the UK of course.

I put together this little video of my June trip and am very much looking forward to the re-visit next week.

Note the lack of cars and no speed vans or cameras. Not saying there aren't any but.....

  12. Excerpts from 3 European trips so far this year. Having done road trips to Scotland and Wales, I don’t think I would ever do them again. Europe offers fantastic scenery and great roads and tours can often be done for the same or less money.

  13. Yes, I know exactly how, but given that you refused a few months ago to share a nice driving route with me I shall keep it to myself.

    #karma

I'm sure someone will be along to tell you how to do it soon enough, anyway. I just wanted to get that out there, 'cos I hold grudges for aaaaaaaages. :D

It's yours I want to get rid of.
