Supratad Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Having tried the several pennies trick, I found the pre load was causing a wind noise to be heard from the slightly ajar boot lid, so I removed them all. Quote
Sam Mcgoo Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Yeah, adding load to the spring shouldn't lift your boot ajar unless the latch was badly aligned or you had so many pennies in the spring was bottoming out and actually bending your boot lid. Quote
Toad Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 zmanalex advised me to look at the latch - its got lazy but i really can't be assed to take anything else apart for now - so given up, will see if anyone can give me some advise at Japfest Quote
amstrange1 Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Where can you get those dude? The actual ones I used are 3M Bumpons: http://www.vikingtapes.co.uk/p-758-3m-sj5027-bumpon-protectors-79mm-x-160mm.aspx But I'm sure that anything a similar size/shape will do. They're 8mm tall and 16mm diameter. Quote
offshore-drifter Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I would be looking at the latch if new springs don't work. Try lowering the latch just slightly, so when you close the lid, it still latches.... There is every possibility that over time, the latch has moved upwards. I will check this on mine tomoz and let you know. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Quote
Supratad Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I had no idea it can be adjusted. I'll fettle on the weekend. Quote
offshore-drifter Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 It should be adjustable.. Just lower it slightly. It should clear when first popped then. I havent had time today to look at mine. But will try my best. Im getting a few jobs done on the car today. Quote
Toad Posted April 10, 2013 Author Posted April 10, 2013 let me know if latch moing works and how easy it is to do - almost optamistic again Quote
offshore-drifter Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Well... Now i can tell you for a FACT!!! It worked!! Took me litterally 2 minutes! Pull the rubber trim off to give access to the rear plastic trim, pull the bottom of the trim outwards and carefully pull upwards and remove! Dont pull out too far though as theres an interior light on that pannel.. Once you have done that you will be at the latch! Loosen the 2 X 12mm nuts and move the latch down as far as it will go... Tighten up, put the trim back and test That will be a tenner please And the next person to waste money on new springs will get a slap!!! Haha 1 Quote
gravy Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Awesome work mate, cant wait to try it myself Quote
Toad Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 ohh will try it - anyone want to buy some springs off me Quote
Toad Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 bah - has a bit more ping about it but still doesn't quite clear Quote
Toad Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 helped a bit but still doesn't quite clear - even though it has a bit more umph about it when i push the button Quote
Toad Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 right moved the main plate down slightly and its jsut working - the boot wont shut on its own weight now though it bounces - so have to keep hand on it to shut it properly - but at least it opens with one hand which is great news not sure it will work every time - btw amstrange did you see how much those nipple are - £170 quid or something - thats a lot of money i thought the springs were expensive Quote
Lanky Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Have you checked for any stiction in the hinges as it opens? Perhaps a good greasing might help here. Also I'd say try and fine tune your latch plate placement. Do all the free mods first before changing parts if you can help it mate, then at least you're not out of pocket when it doesn't work. 1 Quote
Toad Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 anyone at Japfest able to help me with this or at least have a look at the boot - would be much appreciated Quote

Sam Mcgoo Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 My boot experience during my ownership is - Opened first time, did stay up 6 months in summer Opened first time, Didn't stay up - Winter Removed weight - Opened first time, did stay up. - Summer Opened first time, didn't stay up - Winter Replaced with up-rated SGS struts- Didn't open first time, Did stay up Penny/rubber washer fix Did open, did stay until another winter came Adjusted Latch Does open, Does stay up Basically its a balancing act of all the above Quote
glrnet Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Only the latch adjust left for me, I'll add that to the list of stuff to do Quote
Toad Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 stuck a rubber washer in for now and it works - cant let boot free fall shut now as it bounces so need to keep hand on it when closing but it opens one hand so thats better Quote

I'm sure the similar sized stuff on eBay would do the trick too! Quote

I think the SGS struts are slightly longer and slightly more powerful than OEM ones, so that the poppers have a harder time of pinging the tailgate off the latch. But it seems that if you can adjust the latch and re-tension the poppers then it's all good! Quote
danpollard Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Am I being a massive struggler, of are the struts an absolute bugger to get off?! I've decided to go for the regassing if possible to a higher pressure, or new ones failing that, but I cannot get the ball joints off on the tailgate mount end. So I tried undoing the nut that mounts it to the tailgate. No joy with either, and I don't think I was being gentle!! Quote
