Enough with the whining!!!!

I have finally got the courage up to ask the question as i fear the answer will cost me lots of money.

For a while now my car has made a whining noise in first a second gear. If i accelerate (When the engine is warm) to around 3000 - 4000 RPM in first and then take my feet off the peddles, i can hear a whining sound as the revs fall back down. The same is true for second gear although the sound is not as loud here. If i dip the clutch the sound persists so i guess it must be something to do with the gearbox or the transmission. If i drop down from third to second at high revs i get the same sound.

On very cold mornings the sound is very much louder until the car warms up (Obviously i am keeping the revs low until the engine has a chance to warm up).

There is no effect on performance and other then the odd time when its a bit notchy, the gear selection is fine.

Any ideas? Preferably ideas that don't cost a lot of money to fix......
