FILTHY Engine Bay. Where to start?

My engine bay is SO SO dirty!

On my other (crappy) cars... I have always jetwashed the engine bay in the first instance (with the engine running) to get the most of the crap off.

But I am NOT willing to do this on the Z. And not JUST because I have a CAI....

So, how do you start? Where/what would you guys start with for an awful, awful engine bay?

Roll of cling film - cover all electronic and intake areas with it

Autoglym Engine & Machine Cleaner

Hose with no attachment

Assortment of old toothbrushes and bigger brushes

Terry towel

AG Vinyl & Rubber Care

Do the cling film bit, then lightly rinse the engine bay and remove the big non greasy bits you can see.

Then spray the E&MC over and agitate with the brushes.

Rinse again - check you got all the bits you wanted to

Use terry towel to wipe over and dry everything

Apply V&RC to get the finish you want on the plastics

Take for a drive to warm everything up and get rid of residue water (and then get back and wipe over again, it will have streaked! ) Just don't touch anything hot!

Oh, and start this with the engine cold.

I'm based in stafford, so telfords not too far away, if i'm coming over to do a Job i just ask for some petrol money to cover costs, obviously if i'm coming to you then i'd need a water feed with hoselock and a power plug for extension lead, and somewhere that i'm not going to die whilst doing it.

  • 5 months later...

If anyones after some Gunk engine degreasant (500ml), I've got loads knocking around and selling for cheap (somehow convinced myself to bulk buy the stuff but I dont clean out my engine bay that often!)

For you guys, £4 a bottle (+P&P) - might just bring a load down to the Wales or Lakez meet if you like.
