A few years ago I met with a Professor of Automotive Industry and his view of the players in the market and what was changing and how it all fitted together, if I went back to all my old notes and things I could probably find it but that is a huge amount of searching. If you go back a lot of years it would have been very different, I had a relative who worked for Austin and in the late 60's and earlier with Issigonis as part of the design team from Morris minor right through and he told lots of stories including one when this little Japanese company brought over a car for them to critique and offered a substantial ownership deal, they of course turned it down but they apparently tore the car apart laughing at the engineering mistakes etc. all the time the Japanese were making copious notes, the rest is history.
