Hello everyone!

Just realised i posted this in the 370z part of the forum yesterday, no wonder nobody was replying!

Anyway, to the point, I know the transmission is quite noisy as standard in the 350z, however the one i purchased not too long ago has a very distinctive whine, mainly noticeable from about 2000 - 3500 revs in any gear (The lower the gear, the more noticeable it is, in higher gears wind/tire noise manly drowns it out). It almost sounds like a supercharger whine, however worrying instead of rewarding .

I have changed both the gearbox oil and the diff oil with little to no noticeable difference to the sound.

All the gears engage and disengage nicely, and everything else seems normal transmission wise after doing some reading on here about what i should expect.

So i guess my question is how much (if any) whine is a concerning amount?

Are you 100% sure it's from the gearbox? Have you tried to rev to 2000-3500 rpm without any gears engaged whilst stationary or cruising?

Its deffo Transmission, only occurs when the drive train is engaged.

I did try to record audio, however ive recently got a new exhaust and you cant hear it over that on the audio.

I'm willing to bet its the LSD - not the tranny itself. My LSD makes a high pitched whine like a supercharger when I apply throttle and it disappears when I back-off. I wouldn't worry about it, as you said yourself, you've replaced the gear and diff oil and its still there. Out of curiosity, how many miles is on your Z at present?

You should be able to amplify your whine in your recording using Audacity (and/or reduce exhaust noise), worth having a play, Audacity is a great (free, completely) app so even if it doesn't help you with your recording, now you've got it, you can use it to cut up mp3s and make ringtones with exactly the parts of the song that you want. lol. I used to mainly use it back in the day for making my favourite songs longer, by copying and splicing in repeating verses and chorus, etc. Cutting and splicing is very easy. I digress... :)

Yeah, only whines on throttle, how did you diagnose it to be the LSD? i've tried to pinpoint it but with no luck.

My Z is on 108,000, ive heard the standard viscous diff isnt great in these, so i guess i have the excuse i need to upgrade it if i wanted too :)

If it helps I had a whine, three garages I went to said it was the diff and not to worry and was normal. At the fourth, Z experienced garage, it was one hub bearing causing it. Replaced and no noise at all.
